Implementation phases for Infrastructure Management

BMC Software recommends that you follow these high-level implementation phases for a new deployment.  You must also deploy BMC TrueSight Operations Mangement. For planning information, see Implementation phases for Operations Management.

Plan and design

Follow the planning process and complete the planning worksheets as you size and make decisions regarding the physical architecture, system setup, scalability, and integrations.

You can deploy Infrastructure Management to collect performance data, collect external events, manage service models, or any combination of these functions.

  • Data collection and event management—The BMC TrueSight Infrastructure Management Server manages performance data from BMC PATROL Agents, and manages external events from the BMC Event Adapter and BMC PATROL Agents.
  • Event and impact management—The BMC TrueSight Infrastructure Management Server manages external events from the BMC Event Adapter, and manages impact data from service models.

Install the Infrastructure Management system components and configure

Install the Infrastructure Management servers, database, and consoles to support your deployment plans, and configure those components for operation and performance.

Install integrations and configure

Install the integrations that will be required to support the use cases that you plan to implement, such as service impact models.

Install event management and performance data sources and configure

Follow the process for installing monitors for collecting performance data and events for devices that you want to monitor. This process includes the following steps:

  • Deploying test systems and populating test data
  • Validating data and tuning the deployment
  • Deploying on production systems and populating production data

(Optional) Define service models to monitor services

Follow the steps for defining services models if you want to enable business service monitoring, probable cause analysis, and intelligent incident generation.

Secure the system and roll out

On the Presentation Server, secure the system components, set up user accounts, and grant users access to the system functions and data.

On an ongoing basis, back up the system. For information, see the following topics:
