Infrastructure Management Data Collection Host overview
This overview presents the following topics:
Infrastructure Management Data Collection Host architecture
Infrastructure Management Data Collection Host is a dedicated resource that collects metric data from devices (including virtual machine monitors, clusters, and host servers), and sends the data to BMC TrueSight Infrastructure Management Server for analysis. Collected data includes CPU usage, memory usage, and data that is specific to the host operating system.
The data collection host is comprised of the following components
- BMC-TrueSight-Infrastructure-Management-Integration-Service
- BMC PATROL Agents
- BMC Performance Manager for Virtual Servers, which includes monitoring solutions for VMware vSphere and Citrix XenServer.
Implementation of the Infrastructure Management Data Collection Host uses the following arrangement of components:
- Each Child Server in the BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management environment requires at least one Infrastructure Management Data Collection Host.
- The data collection host is comprised of the Integration Service and up to three BMC PATROL Agents.
- Each BMC PATROL Agent uses BMC Performance Manager for Virtual Servers Monitoring Solution to collect data from devices.
Infrastructure Management Data Collection Host installation scenarios
You can install the Infrastructure Management and BMC PATROL software components for a data collection host through one of the following installation programs:
- BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management Installer
- Infrastructure Management Data Collection Host standalone installation
Infrastructure Management installation through the BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management Installer
Through the BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management Installer, you provide connection details to BMC TrueSight Infrastructure Management Server hosts and to Infrastructure Management Data Collection Hosts. Through the installer, you can implement the following processes:
- Load the Infrastructure Management monitoring infrastructure packages on the BMC Server Automation Application Server.
- Install one Integration Service on each data collection host.
- Install and configure one or more BMC PATROL Agents and BMC Performance Manager for Virtual Servers Monitoring Solutions on the data collection host.
- Modify an existing BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management environment, including adding a new a data collection host.
Infrastructure Management Data Collection Host standalone installation
Run the Infrastructure Management Data Collection Host standalone installation for one or more of the following reasons:
- You do not have connection information for virtual machine monitors (VMMs) during the BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management Installer process.
- You want to monitor additional VMMs using an existing data collection host.
The Infrastructure Management Data Collection Host standalone installation presents the following options:
- Load the Infrastructure Management monitoring infrastructure packages on the BMC Server Automation Application Server if the server does not yet have the packages.
- Install one Integration Service on the data collection hosts.
- Install and configure a BMC PATROL Agent with BMC Performance Manager for Virtual Servers Monitoring Solutions for each VMM that you want to monitor.
