User groups

A user group represents a collection of roles, CIs, views, SLOs, Reports and Folders. User groups also have a specified set of roles and permissions assigned to them.

When users are assigned to a user group, they have access to the CIs defined in that user group. If the user group has access to a CI, the user has access to all devices associated to that CI.

Roles determine the actions that can be performed by the user on objects accessbile to the user group.

When you create a user group, you must associate at least one role to that user group. User groups can have multiple roles. One role can be assigned to multiple user groups, giving identical permissions to different user groups.

A CI is accessible to a user group only when the user group name is present in the BMC Atrium CMDB-defined RLS and/or WLS or Infrastructure Management-defined RLS and/or WLS fields of the CI.

If the user group is not present in the WLS field of the CI, the users assigned to this user group are unable to access this functionality, even if the required roles are assigned to the user group.

Note

It is recommended to delete all unused user groups. The Administrator must review all the user groups and delete all user groups that are not used.

See Default roles and permissions for a detailed description of the default roles and permissions.
