Configuring notification rules


This topic provides instructions for creating, editing, viewing, enabling, disabling, and deleting notification rules. To understand the concept of notification rules and how they can be useful, see Managing-notification-rules.

To create a notification rule

  1. Log in to the TrueSight console, and go to Configuration > Notification Rules.

  2. Do one of the following:
    • Click the action menu console_actionMenu2.png next to Notification Rules, click Create Notification Rule one_stmp.png.
    • Click Create Notification Rule two_stmp.png.
  3. Specify a unique rule name (alphanumeric string) and an optional description.
  4. Select the Infrastructure Management server on which you want to create the notification rule.
  5. Select one of the following rule types:
    • Basic: Basic rules are applicable to intelligent events and external events. You can choose monitor types for intelligent events while creating basic rules.
    • Advanced: Advanced rules are applicable only to Intelligent events. You can choose monitor instances and attributes for monitor types while creating advanced rules.
  6. Set the time range or schedule for the notification rule. By default, Time Range is recurring and does not have a start and an end date. Whereas while creating a schedule, you can specify one-time or recurring options, and a specific start and an end date.

    Time Range or Schedule

    Specify one of the following options:

    • Time Range: Use this option if you want to specify a one-time time range. Set a start and end time in the HH:MM format, and choose the days of the week. To include 24 hours, select "00:00"-"00:00".
    • Schedule: Use this option if you want to select an out-of-the-box schedule or create a new custom schedule as per your requirement. You can define a one-time or recurring schedule. Do one of the following:
      • Select a schedule from the list.

        Note: Following out-of-the-box schedules are supported: 24*7, Business Hours

      • Click Create New Schedule to create a custom schedule:
        1. Specify a unique schedule name.
        1. Select a time zone.
        2. Do one of the following, and click Add.
          1. Select the include time criteria. You can select days of the week, and start and end time. The Include criteria is recurring. For example, if you select Wednesday and Thursday (9 AM to 9 PM), it means that the rule is applicable for all Wednesdays and Thursdays between 9 AM - 9 PM.
          2. Select the exclude time criteria. You can choose to define one of the following:
            • One-Time: Specify a start and end date and time.
            • Monthly: Specify a day of the month, and start and end time.
        3. You can specify multiple include and exclude criteria for a schedule. To add another include or exclude criteria, go back to the previous step.

    Additional actions for schedule:

    To edit a schedule


      • Select a schedule from the list, and click Edit_schedule.png:
        1. If the schedule is associated with any object, for example, notification rules or reports, then a warning message is displayed along with a list of associated objects. 
        2. Click Yes to continue editing.
        3. Edit the details provided while creating the schedule. 

    To delete a schedule


      • Select a schedule from the list, and click Edit_schedule.png:
        1. If the schedule is associated with any object, for example, notification rules or reports, then a warning message is displayed along with a list of associated objects. 
        2. Click Yes to continue editing.
        3. Click Delete Schedule.

          Note: If the schedule has associated objects, it can't be deleted. Before deleting the schedule, remove the associated objects.

  7. (Optional) Do one of the following to specify the filtering conditions to select the Infrastructure Management server groups:

    • Click Add Group Filter, and specify the group filtering conditions. You can choose one of the following options, and click Save.

      • No Filter: Notification rule is applicable to all monitors
      • Include Selected Groups: Notification rule is applicable to the selected groups
      • Exclude Selected Groups: Notification rule is not applicable to the selected groups but applicable to all the other groups in the list

      Note

      If you select either the Include Selected Groups or Exclude Selected Groups option, only the device-associated events trigger a notification rule. If you select No Filter, then both device-associated and non device-associated events can trigger the notification rule. Use an event management policy to trigger a non device-associated events exclusively.

    • Click Edit_schedule.pngnext to Group Filter, and modify the group filtering conditions, and click Save.

    Note: When you edit Event Type Filter in the next step, the monitor types of these selected groups will be displayed in Event Type Filter. You can define the event selection criteria for the monitor types that are listed.

  8. Click Edit_schedule.pngnext to Event Type Filter, and specify the event selection criteria based on the notification rule type as explained in the following section, and save the event filtering condition:

    Select one or both of the following event types, and do the following:

    • Intelligent Events: Do the following:

      1. Select one or more monitor types.

        Native Monitors

        By default, the native monitors are not listed. To include native monitors, do the following:

        1. Log in to the Presentation Server.
        2. Run the command: tssh properties set excludeNativeMonitors false reload
      2. Specify the event selection criteria for one or more of the following event categories:
        • Event

          1. Select the event Severity and Direction.
          2. Select one or more Event States.
        • Abnormality

          1. Select one or more Abnormality States.
          2. Specify the Abnormality Score.
        • Predictive

          1. Select the Predicted Severity.
          2. Select one or more Predictive States.
    • External Events:
      1. Select the event Severity.
      2. Select one or more Event States.

    By default, both options are selected. You can select one or both the options.

    The following table lists the applicable and non-applicable filtering options when you select both Intelligent Events and External Events:

    • Relationship direction Any, Up, or Down options of the event severity level

    1. Click Select Attribute Information to choose the attributes.
    2. Do one or both of the following:
      • Select Monitor Type and Attribute. A list of monitor types is displayed. Do the following:

        1. Select a monitor type.
          A list of associated attributes are displayed.
        2. Select one or more attributes.
        3. Do one of the following:
          • Click Save, and repeat steps i and ii to add multiple monitor types and attributes.
          • Click Save and Close to go back to the main page.

        Native Monitors

        By default, the native monitors are not listed. To include native monitors, do the following:

        1. Log in to the Presentation Server.
        2. Run the command: tssh properties set excludeNativeMonitors false reload
      • Select Monitor Instance and Attribute. A list of monitor types is displayed. Do the following:
        1. Select a monitor type.
          A list of associated instances and attributes is displayed.
        2. Select one or more instances.
        3. Select one or more attributes.
        4. Click Add.
        5. Do one of the following:
          • Repeat steps i to iv to add multiple monitor types, instances and attributes.
          • Click Close to go back to the main page.
    3. The selected monitor instances, monitor types and attributes are listed under the Attribute / Instance / Severity Filter section. Select a monitor type or instance and click the corresponding Severity column to change the event severity criteria. A few examples for the event severity status are: Minor, Major, Critical, Predictive Minor etc.

      You cannot configure an advanced notification rule for the event severity changing to a lower value. To trigger a notification when the event severity changes to a lower value, use cell event rules. For details, see Execute-rules.

    4. Select one or more event states.
    5. Specify the abnormality score for abnormality events.
  9. Specify one or both of the following notification actions:
    • Send Email: Do the following:
      1. (Optional) Enter the sender's email address. 
      2. Use one or both of the following options to enter the recipient's email address:

        • Email Id: Use this option to enter an individual email address:

          1. Enter the email id of the recipient.
          2. Select one of the following message formats for the email:
            • ASCII - Full Page
            • ASCII - One-sentence Summary
            • HTML/GIF - Full Page
          3. Click Add.
        • Email Group: To enter the email group details, select an email group from the drop-down list, and click Add. 

          How do I create, edit, or delete a new email group?

          • If you want to create, edit, or delete an email group, on the Configuration > Notification Rules pageclick the action menu console_actionMenu2.png next to Notification Rules, and select Configure Email Groups. For details, see Configuring-email-groups-for-notification-rules.
          • If you create a new email group, the newly created group will be listed in the email group drop-down list. Select the group that you just created and click Add.
          • Ensure that the SMTP server is configured correctly to send the email notifications successfully.
    • Send SNMP Trap
      Enter an SNMP server host name or IP address.
  10. (Optional) Click Customize Event Text to customize the email subject and body. If you do not choose to customize the event text, global event text settings will be applicable to the email subject and body.
  11. By default, the notification rule is enabled and ready to be processed immediately. Optionally, you can disable the rule.
  12. Save the notification rule.

To edit a notification rule on the TrueSight console

Do the following to edit a notification rule on the TrueSight console:

  1. On the Configuration >  Notification Rules page, from the notification rule console_actionMenu2.png action menu, select Edit.

  2. Change the configuration details provided while creating the notification rule and click Save. You can modify all the details except the rule name and the associated Infrastructure Management server details.

To view a list of notification rules

On the Configuration >  Notification Rules page, select the Infrastructure Management server to view a list of associated notification rules:

  • By default, the notification rules are sorted by Rule Name. To sort on a different column, click the column name.
  • The Infrastructure Management server can immediately process the notification rule that is enabled. To enable or disable a notification rule, see enabling or disabling a notification rule.
  • The Owner displays the user name associated with a notification rule. Initially, the user who creates the notification rule is the owner of the rule. 

    Can I change the owner associated with a notification rule?

    A user with admin privileges can change the owner associated with a notification rule by editing it. For details, see changing the owner for a notification rule.

To change the owner for a notification rule

You can change the owner associated with a notification rule, if you are a user with admin privileges.

Do the following:

  1. On the Configuration >  Notification Rules page, from the notification rule console_actionMenu2.png action menu, select Edit.
  2. Locate the Owner field, and select a user from the drop-down list.
  3. Save the notification rule.

To enable or disable a notification rule

On the Configuration >  Notification Rules pagefrom the notification rule console_actionMenu2.png action menu, select Enable or Disable.

The enabled notification rules can be processed immediately by the Infrastructure Management server.

To delete a notification rule

On the Configuration >  Notification Rules pagefrom the notification rule console_actionMenu2.png action menu, select Delete.

The Infrastructure Management server deletes the notification rule and refreshes the Configuration >  Notification Rules page.
