Re-indexing data


When you upgrade from previous versions of IT Data Analytics to IT Data Analytics 11.0.00 version, the previously indexed data may not be compatible with the newer version. It is, therefore, processed for a successful upgrade. Depending on your indexed data and which version of IT Data Analytics you are upgrading from, re-indexing takes place in two stages. One is a pre-upgrade step and the other is a post-upgrade step.

Pre-upgrade step: If you are upgrading from IT Data Analytics 2.5.00 or 2.7.00 versions and if you have indexes created in IT Data Analytics 2.1 or earlier versions, you will be prompted to run a utility before the upgrade. Indexes created in IT Data Analytics version 2.1 and prior cannot be directly upgrade to IT Data Analytics version 11.0.00, therefore they need to be migrated using a utility called as "IndexerDataMigrationTool". If no such indexes are found, you can directly proceed with the upgrade.The utility is found in the following directory:

  • (Windows): <INSTALLER_DIRECTORY>\BMC-TrueSight-IT-Data-Analytics\Disk1\utility\IndexUpgradeUtility.zip
  • (Linux): <INSTALLER_DIRECTORY>\BMC-TrueSight-IT-Data-Analytics\Disk1\utility\IndexUpgradeUtility.tar

Post-upgrade step: After upgrading, the indexes of previous IT Data Analytics versions are migrated to IT Data Analytics version 11.0.00 by default for all the indexes (except those in 2.5 or 2.7 versions, which were created in 2.1 or before for which you need to carry out the Pre-upgrade steps). If you want, you can modify certain properties to manage how you're doing the re-indexing. For more information, see To modify properties for re-indexing after upgrading.

Use the following instructions for migrating the indexes:

Before you begin

Recommendation

IT Data Analytics does not automatically back up indexed data. Since performing an upgrade always has its share of risks, BMC recommends you to ensure that you create a backup of the indexed data at an appropriate location.

To migrate the indexes before upgrading

  1. Navigate to the following location based on your operating system:

    • Windows: <INSTALLER_DIRECTORY>\BMC-TrueSight-IT-Data-Analytics\Disk1\utility\IndexUpgradeUtility.zip

    • Linux: <INSTALLER_DIRECTORY>\BMC-TrueSight-IT-Data-Analytics\Disk1\utility\IndexUpgradeUtility.tar

3. Extract the .zip or the .tar file as per your operating system. 

4. Run the following migration utility based on your operating system:


    • Windows: IndexerDataMigrationTool.bat

    • Linux: IndexerDataMigrationTool.sh

5. The progress of re-indexing is displayed.

To modify properties for re-indexing after upgrading

The properties available to change the parameters of re-indexing are in the location:

<ITDA_INSTALLATION_DIRECTORY>\BMC Software\TrueSight\ITDA\custom\conf\server\olaengineCustomConfig.properties

Re-indexing may increase CPU utilization. You can use throttling, which increases the time taken for re-indexing, but reduces the CPU utilization. For more information refer to the table.

You can modify the values of the following properties in the olaengineCustomConfig.properties file:

After changing the properties, if the Console Server component is already running, restart it.
