Future Saturation page in the vSphere Virtual Machines view

The Future Saturation page in the vSphere Virtual Machines view displays all VMs that will saturate either their CPU, memory, or file system space within the next 30 days. All values are calculated over the last full month, and the current month.

To access the page, in the TrueSight console navigation pane, click Capacity > Views > Virtualization > vSphere > Virtual Machines, and in the vSphere Virtual Machines page, click the Future Saturation tab.

VMs exhausting capacity table

The VMs exhausting capacity table displays the capacity status of VMs, daily trends, and the estimated number of days to saturation. Each row in the table corresponds to a VM and displays the following metrics:

1 Computed for VMs only if there is data for the Virtual Node, an established relationship (GM_ASSOCIATED_TO_VN) exists between the VM and its corresponding Virtual Node (VN), and the system is saturated. To create the GM_ASSOCIATED_TO_VN relationship, rerun the Virtual Node Linker system task (Administration > ETL & SYSTEM TASKS > System tasks > Virtual Node Linker). If the three criteria mentioned are not satisfied, the columns are left blank.

For more information about the Days to Saturation and other indicator parameters used for metric computations in this view, see Indicators.

To view details for a particular VM

To view the details page for a specific VM, click its (hyper-linked) name under the VM column. You can use the sorting and filtering options on the page to find a specific cluster.

For more information, see Sorting tables in views on TrueSight console and Using-filtering-options-in-the-TrueSight-console.

The VM details page displays information for the selected VM under the following sections or panels:

Section or Panel

Description

Summary page

A quick graphical summary of the CPU and memory utilization, and network bit rate and disk transfer rate for the VM. Core metrics for the selected entity are displayed as analysis charts, depending on available data. At the bottom of each chart is a link that takes you to the Data Explorer view for the specific resource type, and displays charts and information for a larger set of metrics.

The data displayed in Data Explorer view charts for any resource part of this view category, is based on the time filter that is applied to the primary view in this tab. You can select other time filter options to view charts over a different time resolution

For more information, see Virtual-Machine-page-in-the-vSphere-Data-Explorer-view.

Configuration Details page

Related Information panel

Clicking the links in the Related Information panel displays additional details related to the selected VM.

  • Virtual NodeClicking on the link takes you to the server details page for the selected virtual node entity.
    About virtual node
For managing the capacity of a virtualized system running inside an individual VM, you need the inside view of the performance of a VM. Such VM systems where data is collected from inside the OS are called Virtual Nodes. Virtual Node contains additional metrics that are useful for more detailed analysis of the capacity and performance of the VM.
This link is enabled when the administrator has completed the following tasks:
  • Thresholds: Clicking on the link cross-launches to the Capacity Optimization console and take you to the Thresholds page for the selected VM. For more information, see Configuring-and-managing-thresholds-for-metrics-and-indicators.

Recommendations panel

All available recommendations for the VM. For more information, see Recommendations-page-in-the-vSphere-Virtual-Machines-view.

Note

If the virtual node data is available, the forecasted saturation for memory is computed based on the virtual node memory utilization. Otherwise, it is computed using MEM_ACTIVE of the virtual machine.  When using MEM_ACTIVE, the vSphere VM Active Memory increase factor is applied to increase the MEM_ACTIVE metric value. You can configure the value of this vSphere VM Active Memory increase factor. For details, see Configuring-and-managing-thresholds-for-metrics-and-indicators.

Tags panel

List of tags that are associated with the VM. You can assign or remove tags by using the Edit Tags option from the Tags action menu.
