Analyzing storage capacity utilization (NetApp specific)
Storage demand exponentially grew over the past years and led to runaway storage costs. To control these costs, SAN administrators are asked to better plan for future capacity needs, which is almost impossible without a clear view of the storage capacity utilization. With the NetApp Systems view, administrators can analyze storage capacity utilization:
At the HA Pair or clusters level
- Access the NetApp Systems page:
- Log on to the TrueSight console.
- In the Navigation pane, click Capacity > Storage > NetApp Systems.
- Click the HA Pairs or Clusters tab.
- Verify the capacity of the HA Pairs or Clusters and more specifically:
- their overall size (Size metric).
- their total space (Capacity metric).
- the host visible capacity (Subscribed Capacity metric).
- the total space not consumed (Available Capacity metric).
- the space actually consumed (Consumed Capacity metric).
- Click the HA Pair or Cluster for which you wish to get more information.
- Refer to the Storage Capacity graph to analyze the trend of the utilization of your HA Pair or cluster.
- You can also export this data to Excel for further analysis by first clicking
> Save As > XLSX.
Based on the capacity information available, you can now plan for your current and future capacity needs.
At the aggregates level
- Access the NetApp Systems page:
- Log on to the TrueSight console.
- In the Navigation pane, click Capacity > Storage > NetApp Systems.
- Click the Aggregates tab.
- Verify the capacity of your aggregates and more especially:
- their overall size (Size metric).
- their total space (Capacity metric).
- the host visible capacity (Subscribed Capacity metric).
- the total space not consumed (Available Capacity metric).
- the space actually consumed (Consumed Capacity metric).
- Click the aggregate for which you wish to get more information.
- Refer to the Storage Capacity graph to analyze the trend of your aggregate utilization.
- You can also export this data to Excel for further analysis by first clicking
> Save As > XLSX.
This capacity information will help you better control your storage costs.
