Creating virtualization studies to assess VM capacity requirements

Virtual Planner allows you to view the impact of consolidation decisions such as consolidating guests to single or multiple virtual hosts, which help streamline your systems, reduce costs, and continue to provide optimal customer service. It helps you assess and report your virtualization efforts. Based on existing business service objectives, you can conduct a study to determine the number of virtual hosts you need to support your virtualization goals, including server consolidation, and obtain easy-to-read recommendations through web-based reports and graphs.

After applying filters for the type of virtualization you are planning, you can view the systems that are candidates for virtualization. The Virtual Planner suggests which stand-alone computers and existing guests should be assigned to each target virtual host. It takes affinity relationships between systems into consideration to indicate which computers or guests should be placed on the same host and which should be placed on different hosts.

For instance, if you are a Capacity Planner, and your organization is looking for ways to cut costs in all departments. You know of a number of under-utilized Windows machines that can save cost by consolidating servers. Your manager has asked you to report on the performance and capacity of these machines and provide a recommendation.

Tip

This feature replaces the Consolidation View available in previous versions. You can convert consolidation scenarios to saved studies to migrate your data and use it from the Virtual Planner tab.
