Working with tag filters

To use tag filters in views in the TrueSight console

Tags are available for both out-of-the-box and custom views. To use tags in custom views, first ensure that the tag filter is enabled.

For out-of-the-box views, you can also create temporary tags for information that you require only for your current login session. The temporary tags that you create are available only for the current login session. For more information, see Managing temporary tags.

To add tags in a System Details page

1. In the System Details page of a view, in the top horizontal section that displays view details, click the action menu next to Tagsand click Edit tags.
   In the Assign Tags dialog box, a list of all existing tags, including temporary tags are listed. They are grouped by category.
2. Type a search string in the Search box, and press the Enter key.
   All tags that match the specified string are displayed.
3. Select the check box next to the required tag.
   Alternatively, you can also expand the tag category and select the tag to add.
   The selected tag appears under Associated tags.

Managing temporary tags

You can create temporary tags in any view page that has summary tables. These temporary tags are available only in your current login session. If you want to use the tag in future, you can save it as a permanent tag.

To create and assign temporary tags to systems in the Search Results page

After you search for systems based on a specific search string and open the Search Results page to view all results, you can group all or some of them by assigning a temporary tag to them.

1. In the Search Results page, click the action menu  next to the page title and click Create temporary tag.
    
2. In the Temporary Tag dialog box, complete the following steps:

   1. Type a name for the temporary tag.

      Note

      The tag name must be unique and cannot contain any special characters.

   2. In the table, select the check box next to the system, or systems, that you want to tag.
3. Click Apply.
   The temporary tag is created and applied to the selected systems. However, the Search Results page displays all the systems that match the search string.
4. To save the temporary tag, click the action menu and select Manage temporary tags. For more information, see To save a temporary tag as a permanent tag.

To create and apply temporary tags in a summary table

1. In the view page that you want to create a temporary tag for, next to the page title, click the action menu  next to No tags filter and click Create temporary tag.
   
2. In the Temporary Tag dialog box, complete the following steps:

   1. Type a name for the temporary tag.

      Note

      The tag name must be unique and cannot contain any special characters.

      

   2. In the table, select the check box next to the system, or systems, that you want to tag.
3. Click Apply.
   The temporary tag is created and applied. Only those systems with the tag are displayed in the summary table. The temporary tag is also displayed at the top of the page.
   The other pages in the view also display only those systems with the applied tag.

Example 2

After applying existing tags to filter out items in a summary table, you can further create temporary tags to quickly access a specific item, or items.

In this example, in the vSphere view Clusters page, you want to have quick access to a few specific Windows, Production systems for your current session.

First, you use the tag filters to display only the Windows, Production systems and then you can select the specific systems to tag.

1. In the view page that you want to create a temporary tag for, next to the page title, click the action menu  next to No tags filter and click Apply Tags Filter.
   In the Apply Tags Filter box, all available tags are listed by category.
2. Expand the Environment tag category and select Production.
3. Expand the OS Family tag category and select Windows.
   You can also search for a tag by typing a string in the Search field and clicking Search.
4. Click Apply.
   The tags are applied and the view page displays only those elements associated with the selected tags.
   
   To create a temporary tag
5. If you want to further narrow the scope of your analysis only for your current session, you can filter out more systems and display only a specific system using temporary tags.
6. Click next to the tag filters, and click Create temporary tag.
7. In the edit section that appears at the bottom of the page, perform the following tasks:
8. In the Temporary Tag field, type a title for the tag.
   You can also select a previously created temporary tag.
9. In the table, select the check box next to the system, or systems that you want to tag.
10. Click Apply.
    The temporary tag is applied and only those systems with the tag are displayed in the summary table. The temporary tag is also displayed at the top of the page, along with the other applied tag filters.
    The other pages in the view also display only those systems with the applied tags.

To save a temporary tag as a permanent tag

After you create temporary tags, you can save them to use them in the future. 

1. In the view page from where you want to save the temporary tag, click the Tags action menu , select Manage temporary tags.The Temporary Tags page opens that lists all the temporary tags as separate tabs. For each tag, a list of systems to which the tag applies, is displayed.
2. Click the tab of the temporary tag that you want to save and click Save as Tag.
3. If you want to specify a different name for the new tag, type the new name in the Name box.
4. From the Tag Type list, select the tag type.
   The temporary tag is saved as a permanent tag and removed from the list of temporary tags on the Temporary Tags page.
5. Click the browser's Back button to go back to the view page.

To remove a system from a temporary tag

You can modify the associated systems in a temporary tag and save the changes to the temporary tag.

1. In the view page from where you want to modify a temporary tag, click the Tags action menu , and select Manage temporary tags.The Temporary Tags page opens that lists all the temporary tags and the systems to which the tags apply.
2. For the system that you want to remove, click the associated action menu  and select Delete.

To create and apply temporary tags in a system details page

You can create temporary tags in a System Details view page.

1. In the System Details page of a view, in the top horizontal section that displays view details, click the action menu next to Tags and click Edit tags.
   In the Assign Tags dialog box, a list of all existing tags, including temporary tags are listed. They are grouped by category.
   

2. To create a temporary tag, in the Search field, type the name of the tag that you want to create.

   Note

   The tag name must be unique and cannot contain any special characters.

   A link appears below the Search field Create new tag "tagName".
   

3. Click the link.
   In the dialog box that appears, the Tag Name field is populated with the tag name that you specified in the previous step.
4. From the Tag Type list, select Temporary tags.
   
5. Click Done.
   The temporary tag is created and is added to the Associated tags list in the Assign tags dialog box.
6. Click Apply. The temporary tag is applied to the data in the System Details view page.
