Product features

  • Reserve and schedule IT infrastructure resources for onboarding applications.
  • Forecast and model changes in demand to adjust IT resources as needed.
  • Optimize the use of cloud services with visibility for best placement and cost of service.
  • Plan and optimize your infrastructure and budget.
  • Report the cost of IT resources to business and IT stakeholders.

The two TrueSight Capacity Optimization consoles enable you to analyze, forecast, and optimize IT capacity and performance across all IT resources, and configure and administer your TrueSight Capacity Optimization environment.

End-to-end use cases

TrueSight Capacity Optimization supports various capacity management, planning, and optimization use cases.

This Implementing section guides you through end-to-end use cases by specific technologies and describes how you can implement TrueSight Capacity Optimization in your environment.

The following figure highlights the main goals that TrueSight Capacity Optimization helps you achieve.  Every use case has been put together by taking into account these goals.

This Implementing section guides you through end-to-end use cases by specific technologies and describes how you can implement TrueSight Capacity Optimization in your environment. For details, see Implementing.

Following is a quick summary of the main questions these goals will help to answer while running the typical capacity-related end to end use cases documented in the Implementing section:

goal_understandusage.png

Understand usage

  • How do I get visibility into all the IT resources?
  • What is the current utilization level?
  • What is the cost of the current utilization?
  • Where is the highest resource consumption?
  • Which business service or department consumes the most resources?
  • How do I provide stakeholders insights about resource usage?

goal_avoidrisk.png

Avoid risk

  • Are there any upcoming saturations?
  • Do I have enough resources supporting my critical business applications?
  • Is a resource at risk due to overload that might cause performance issues?
  • How many additional users can I support given the current utilization trend?

goal_improveefficiency.png

Improve efficiency

  • Are there any underutilized or overallocated resources?
  • Is there an opportunity to optimize capacity, increase density, or reduce cost?
  • Can I identify wasted and unused capacity (idle VMs, unmapped volumes, old snapshots)
  • Is there an opportunity for consolidation, virtualization, or migration to cloud?

goal_managedemand.png

Manage demand

  • Can I satisfy new workload requirements for the next 6 months?
  • Which is the best target to deploy my application X?
  • How do I ensure I have the resources to successfully deliver my upcoming projects?

User roles

The TrueSight Capacity Optimization product supports users with the following types of roles in their organization.

  • Administrator
    • Deploys and upgrades the product, creates users or configures an LDAP integration, creates and assigns roles and permissions to users, ensures that the TrueSight Capacity Optimization environment is secure
    • Following installation and configuration of the product, sets up or customizes integrations, and creates custom views
    • Uses the  self-monitoring capabilities in TrueSight Capacity Optimization to ensure that the product remains healthy over time
    • Using a development environment and SQL scripts, extends and customizes the TrueSight Capacity Optimization product. Can also use product tools to integrate data sources.
  • Capacity planner: Following customization and setup of the TrueSight Capacity Optimization product, reserves and schedules IT infrastructure resources, forecasts and models changes to adjust IT resources, report the cost of IT resources to business and IT and application stakeholders.
  • Capacity operator: Operates capacity optimization environment.

For details on default user roles, see Default-users-and-user-groups.

Product documentation

The TrueSight Capacity Optimization documentation helps new and experienced users implement or use this product. Based on your role, the following sections of the documentation are recommended:userRolesTSCO_sm_11.0.pngTo receive notification about product and documentation updates, all users should view and set up a watch on the Release-notes-and-notices topic.
