Enabling automatic dismissal and purging of systems and business drivers

As an administrator, you can automate the dismissal and purging of entities (systems and business drivers).

You can, thereby, save the database space and clean up the environment from unused and obsolete entities. As a result, the number of unused or inactive systems is reduced and you can align the system licensing count with that of the systems.

To configure the system to automatically dismiss or purge data, navigate to Administration, click Data Warehouse and select Aging Configuration. Then, complete the following steps:

  1. Enable dismissal or purging of entities
  2. Configure entity inactivity thresholds

You can manually dismiss or purge the entities too. For more information, see Life-cycle-and-status-of-entities-and-domains.

To enable or disable dismissal or purging of entities

You can enable or disable automatic dismissal or purging of the following entities: Systems and Business Drivers. By default, the dismissal and purging features are disabled.

  1. Depending on the entity, access the appropriate subpage in the Aging Configuration page:

      • For automatic purging of system data: Click the System tab.
      • For automatic purging of business driver data: Click the Business Driver tab.
  2. In the System page or Business Driver page, slide the appropriate toggle button enable.png  to enable or disable the dismissal or purging of entities. As shown in the following screenshot, automatic dismissal and purging of systems is enabled.

To disable the automatic dismissal of systems, slide the toggle button 1
To disable the automatic purging of systems, slide the toggle button 2

The Administration > Data Warehouse > Aging Configuration, Automatic Purging > Purge systems after property purges the systems that reside in the dismissed list after the specified months of inactivity. For example, if you specify 3 months, then, any system that has been inactive for 3 months and resides in the dismissed list is purged from the environment. It does not matter if the entity has resided in the dismissed list for a longer duration. What matters is that the entity is a part of the dismissed list and was last active for more than the value specified in the Purge systems after property.

This additional series purging functionality was added to handle BY metrics where the sub-object value were changing over time causing old series to accumulate within entities. For example, if the TrueSight Capacity Optimization Gateway Server ETL is configured to import the By Command statistics, this would ensure that any commands that have stopped reporting for a period of time, would be purged from the entity rather than constantly accumulating in the command list.

Important

This property purges only performance metrics and not configuration metrics.

To disable the Entities Cleaner series purge functionality:

  1. In Administration > ETL & System Tasks > System Tasks > Entities Cleaner, click Edit run configuration.
  2. At the bottom of the page, click the this page link in the You can manually edit task properties from this page.
  3. In the Add a new property edit box, enter automatic.series.purging property.
  4. Click the Add button to add this property to the ETL with a default value of #INSERT VALUE#.
  5. Edit the automatic.series.purging property (in the properties list table above) and change #INSERT VALUE# to false.
  6. Click Save.

Configuring this property will stop the Entities Cleaner from purging any series based on the Purge systems after property value.

To configure entity inactivity thresholds

You can configure the inactivity thresholds for the following entities: Systems and Business Drivers

  1. Access the appropriate subpage in the Aging Configuration page:
    • For automatic purging of system data: Click the System tab.
    • For automatic purging of business driver data: Click the Business Driver tab.
  2. In the Automatic purging section, ensure that the appropriate toggle button is enabled.
  3. Click Edit edit.png and based on your requirement, specify the inactivity duration for the selected entity in number of days, weeks, or months.
    • To move the entities from Unassigned to Dismissed folder of the Workspace, specify the inactivity duration in the field: Dismiss <entity> after

      Note

The Automatic Purging setting does not move entities from Newly Discovered or Unreachable folder to Unassigned or Dismissed folder. You must move such entities manually.

    • To permanently delete entities from the Dismissed folder of the Workspace, specify the inactivity duration in the field: Purge <entity> after

The duration is calculated by using the last activity attribute of the entity.

For example, the following screenshot indicates that systems in the Unassigned folder of the Workspace will be moved to the Dismissed folder after 50 days of inactivity. And, the systems in the Dismissed folder will be permanently deleted after 150 days of inactivity.
