Configuring the NTP Server for the Analyzer and Collector

After you install the Real User Analyzer and Real User Collector on different systems, you must synchronize the time and date between the Analyzer and Collector with a the network time protocol (NTP) server.

Before you begin

  • An NTP server must be configured.
  • The Real End User Experience Monitoring Software Edition must be installed and working.
  • You must have Operator-level access or higher.

To configure the NTP server on Linux

Complete these configuration steps for the Analyzer and Collector.

  1. On your Linux machine, use a text editor to open the /etc/ntp.conf file.
  2. Enter the server's IP address to match your own NTP server's address.
    For example: server 19.168.1.1
  3. Save and close the ntp.conf file.
  4. After the changes in the ntp.conf are saved, start the NTP daemon program with:
    /etc/init.d/ntpd start
  5. Synchronize the time with your NTP server manually using the following command:
    ntpdate –u 19.168.1.1
The -u command option directs the NTP server to use an unprivileged port. This option is useful if the server needs to synchronize with hosts beyond a firewall.

Where to go from here

To start using Real End User Experience Monitoring Software Edition, you must add a Real User Analyzer as a data provider to the Presentation Server. This registration process enables the Presentation Server to receive data from the Real User Analyzer.
