Sizing the Application Diagnostics Server components

Consider the following sizing and scalability guidelines when planning your BMC Application Diagnostics deployment.

The provided values  are estimations, meant as general guidelines for an out-of-the-box configuration, and they do not take all contributing factors (such as metrics and events) into account. If you have values in any of the listed categories that are exceptional, then you should consult with BMC Support. You must monitor your data in the first few days, and based on your results, adjust the database retention period, database size, or both.

Diagnostics Collector sizing and scaling

The Diagnostics Collector database must be scaled to your environment.

Diagnostics Collector database

To calculate the maximum database size, use the following equation:

5 GB x number of Agents = maximum database size

The equation is based on the following environmental factors:

  • Average request size on the Diagnostics Agent: up to 256 KB
  • Average number of entry points: 200 every five minutes
  • Diagnostics Collector database retention period: 35 days (default)

Significant changes to any of the factors affects the database size requirements accordingly.

The default maximum database size is 100 GB, which is enough for 20 Diagnostics Agents in the aforementioned environment. For information about changing the Diagnostics Collector database settings, see Changing Diagnostics Collector settings.

Examples
  • For 30 Diagnostics Agents, use the following equation to calculate the maximum Diagnostics Collector database size:
    5 GB x 30 Agents =  150 GB
  • For 60 Diagnostics Agents, you can split the Agents evenly across three Diagnostics Collectors, so that each Collector requires 100 GB of database space.
  • For a Diagnostics Agent that averages 400 entry points every five minutes, then that Agent needs 10 GB of free space.

Diagnostics Collector software

To install the Diagnostics Collector software and database, the computer must have approximately 2 GB of free disk space.

If all components are installed together, approximately 2.1 GB of disk space is required.

Maximum assignments

  • Maximum Diagnostics Agents per Diagnostics Collector = 200
  • Maximum Diagnostics Collectors per Diagnostics Portal = 5
  • Maximum Diagnostics Agents per Diagnostics Portal = 1000 (divided among 5 Diagnostics Collectors or less)

Diagnostics Portal sizing

Disk space requirements for the Diagnostics Portal software and database are the same, no matter how many Diagnostics Collectors are used.

To install the Diagnostics Portal software and database, the computer must have approximately 2 GB of free disk space.

If all components are installed together, approximately 2.1 GB of disk space is required.

APM proxy sizing

To install the APM proxy software, the computer must have approximately 400 MB of free disk space.

If all components are installed together, approximately 2.1 GB of disk space is required.
