Types of objects in Extended Reporting
Objects in the SAP BusinessObjects BI launch pad are classified according to the following criteria:
Object classification by compatibility
Some objects can be used in any reports and combined with any other objects, but some of them can be used with objects of the same cube type only. Based on this peculiarity, objects can be:
- Generic—Objects that are applicable to several cube types because they are not mapped to any specific cube type. Thus, you can use these objects with any other objects.
- Page or session level—Page level objects are Application and Infrastructure cubes. Session level are Page cubes.
- Cube specific—Objects that are mapped to a specific cube type and cannot be used in one query with objects from a cube in another subject. For example, Page name and Region dimensions.
Object classification by type
Certain objects in the universe represent data that you can select to view in the report, other objects do not represent data but help filter data for the report or select, which metrics to display for instance. Based on this, objects are divided into the following folders:
- Dimensions—This folder contains objects that represent data that you want to see in your report. These objects (for example, Application Name or Page Name) classify and group measures. In SQL, a dimension can be translated into the GROUP BY statement.
- Filters—This folder contains objects (for example, Last Week) that represent conditions that determine further filtering of data. In SQL, a filter can be translated into the WHERE condition.
- Measures—This folder contains objects (for example, Slow Pages and Total Error Count) that represent various metrics that you want to see so that you can analyze the performance or availability of your applications. In SQL, a measure can be translated into an aggregation function and a column, such as sum(page_count).
- Selectors—This folder contains objects representing cubes that you select so that the system knows from which cube to retrieve data.
Refer to the object reference tables to see which objects you can use to create reports in the SAP BusinessObjects BI launch pad.
