Installing the updates

Updating the system is a process that consists of the following procedures: 

1. Checking for updates
2. Downloading the update packages
3. Installing the update packages

To perform these procedures, you must have Administrator-level access, or higher.

Before you begin

Ensure that you have specified components and component groups that you want to update. Only components defined in the Configuration page are part of the system update process.

To check for updates

1. In the BMC Application Performance Management Console component, click System Deployment, and then click System Update.

2. Click Check for Updates. Alternatively, select Check for Updates in the Action menu.
   The system checks for updates on every component that is configured through the Console and displays the progress. You can see the available update packages in the Select Updates table and affected groups in the Select Component Groups section:

   After the system finishes checking for updates, the Download button appears. 

   Note

   When you check the system for updates and the updates are found, all the component groups might appear selected, even if they do not require an update. This behavior does not affect the result, and all available system updates will be installed correctly.

To download the update packages

1. In the Select Updates table, select the check boxes to specify the update packages that you want to install.

    

   Warning

   When you update the product from version 2.0.00, the update for the Console component and all other components are available for download. Unless directed otherwise by BMC Customer Support, install the Console first, and then — install all other components. Otherwise you might face the size limitations for the update.

   Starting from version 2.0.01 this limitation is fixed, so you will not have to worry about it during further system updates. Read more in Known and corrected issues.

2. In the Select Component Groups section, select the check boxes for the component groups that you want to update.
   To see what components the group contains, click the link in this group.
3. Сlick Download.
   You can restart the update process before the download starts or after it finishes.
   The system downloads the selected updates for all components defined in the Console that are entitled for these updates. 
   
   Downloading update packages
   
   
   During the downloading process, the system shows the following information:
   • The progress of downloading
   • The Updates table shows the status for each selected update package and highlights each status:
     
     • Grey — Waiting for download
     • Orange — Downloading in progress
     • Green — Download complete
     • Red — Error

After the downloading process is complete, the Install button appears.

To install the update packages

1. Specify the installation settings by clicking the Action menu and performing the following actions:
   
   1. For the Analyzer component, select the installation mode :
      • (Recommended) Express — Does not migrate all data and therefore takes the least time (up to 2 hours). Because the system does not capture traffic during the update process, you can achieve the minimum downtime when you use this option.
      • Full — Migrates all data and therefore takes the most time (6 to 14 hours)
   2. For both Analyzer and Collector components, select whether to archive the data:
      • Enable — Archives data so that you can use the old data if the installation process fails
      • Disable — Does not archive data and therefore requires less time and space
2. Click Install.
   The confirmation message appears, informing you that you cannot revert the installation, and after the installation all affected components will restart. 
3. Click OK.
   Before you click this button, no components are affected. After you confirm, you cannot cancel the installation. To cancel the installation (for example, if you want to perform the installation at a different time, or if you want to change some of the installation settings), click Cancel instead of OK.  

The installation starts and the system displays the progress.

If the update process involves updating the Console, the system updates and restarts the Console component first. Only after a successful Console update does the system automatically proceed to updating the other selected components.

After the installation process, the message appears with information about whether the installation process was successful and shows the following links:

• View System Update Log — Click this link to view the information about the installation and see where the error occurred:
