VM managers


A virtual machine (VM) manager is a server or software that manages multiple VMs, such as a VMware® vCenter or a stand-alone ESX server (a physical server not managed by a vCenter console).

When you set up the connection to a given VM manager, the system can collect the following information about your VMs through its API:

  • The name of the VM
  • The name of the machine (non-virtual or virtual) hosting the VM
  • Whether or not the VM is running VMware Tools

When you configure a connection to a vCenter console, the system automatically detects any ESX servers it manages. You do not need to add these ESX servers individually. When you add an ESX server already managed by a vCenter console, the system counts the number of VMs the ESX server hosts twice, reducing the coverage your license provides.
