Reports fail to run with Java version 7 update 51


Users who installed Java 7 update 51 are prevented from running reports. This flash topic describes the problem and includes a workaround. Resolution to this problem is targeted for version 2.5.01 (SP1).

Problem

Java 7 update 51 specifically targets Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) and is designed to enhance their authentication and authorization. Developers of RIAs (including applets and Web Start) must update their applets to include a code signature from a trusted authority, which is now required by Java. 

In all versions of BMC Real End User Experience Monitoring and Analytics through 2.5.00, the Reports Java applet within the product does not provide a valid certificate. As a result, if you install Java 7 update 51, you cannot display reports. Instead, you will encounter a warning message, stating that the security settings have blocked the application because it is untrusted, as shown in the following example:

Workaround

You can address the problem by changing the security level from high to medium, as described in the following procedure. Changing the security level permits all Java applets to run, following a security prompt.

  1. Access the Java Control Panel, and select the Security tab. 

    Note

    Windows 7 users: Click Start, and type Java in the Search programs and files box; then select Configure Java.

  2. In the Java Control Panel, lower the default security level to Medium

Solution

BMC Real End User Experience Monitoring and Analytics 2.5.01 (SP1) will resolve this problem.
