Configuring the dashlet

Configure the Projects Overview dashlet to show an overview of health information for synthetic transaction projects over various time periods. Configuration of this dashlet involves choosing the BMC TM ART Central server, the created projects, and two time ranges.

Before you begin

You must have already set up the integration with BMC TM ART by Configuring connections to BMC TM ART Central servers. In addition, you must know which projects you want to display.

To configure the dashlet

  1. On the dashlet’s shortcut menu, click Edit settings

    Warning

    Note

If any Projects Overview dashlet on the current dashboard is in the process of loading when you click Edit settings, the Settings page opens only after the dashlet has finished loading.

  2. In the Dashlet title field, enter a name for the dashlet.
  3. From the Central list, select the BMC TM ART Central server for which you want to see health metrics about the defined synthetic transaction projects.
  4. From the Central Projects list, which lists the projects detected in BMC TM ART Central, select the projects that you want to include in the dashlet.

    Warning

    Note

If you defined a SuperUser for logging on to the BMC TM ART Central front-end server, the list of projects includes projects assigned to all BMC TM ART user groups.

To ensure good performance of the generated dashlet, do not select too many projects for display in a single dashlet. The optimal number of projects to include in a dashlet depends on the performance of the specified BMC TM ART Central server.

  5. In the Time Range 1 field and the Time Range 2 field, select two different time ranges for data display in the dashlet. You can choose from the following time ranges:
    • Last 15 minutes
    • Last 30 minutes
    • Last 45 minutes
    • Last 1 hour
    • Last 2 hours
    • Last 6 hours
    • Last 12 hours
    • Last 24 hours
  6. Click Save.
The projects that you selected to include in the dashlet are queried in BMC TM ART, and the table on the dashlet is gradually populated with the obtained data.

Viewing health information for synthetic transaction projects

The Projects Overview dashlet provides health information for selected projects from BMC TM ART. This dashlet summarizes various health measurements for projects that monitor synthetic transactions, as in the equivalent reports available in BMC TM ART Central. The dashlet is refreshed every 5 minutes.

For each project listed in the dashlet, the dashlet displays details regarding open incidents and health ratings. The following sections provide more information about the displayed details. You can sort all listed data by a specific type of measurement.

For each project, you can view basic information about the status of data collection through a tooltip that appears when you hover over the project name.

For additional details, you can launch BMC TM ART in context and display the corresponding report---either the Project Overview report (Central > Monitoring > Client Health tab) or the Incident report (Central > Monitoring > Incidents tab).

Open incidents

Incidents are raised by BMC TM ART when predefined conditions are met. For example, when performance drops below a certain minimum threshold for a certain length of time and a service target violation is triggered.

dash_projectOV_openIncidents.png

The Projects Overview dashlet displays the number of incidents that are currently open for the monitored projects in the following manner:

  • A large box on the left displays the total number of open incidents.
  • Smaller rectangular boxes display a breakdown of incidents by severity---Information (top left), Warning (top right), Error (bottom left), and Service Target Violation (bottom right).

For more information about incidents, see the BMC Transaction Management Application Response Time Central User Guide.

Health ratings

The Projects Overview dashlet displays average health ratings for the selected projects. These ratings are organized on the dashlet in the following ways:

  • Three columns present the health ratings for different time periods. The first column on the left displays current data measurements, and the other two columns display measurements from the two time ranges that you selected during dashlet configuration.
  • For each time period, an Overall Health rating is followed by the ratings of the three health components from which the Overall Health rating is aggregated:
    • Availability: The percentage of time during which the monitored system is responding and available to share its resources as intended
    • Accuracy: The extent to which transaction contents matched expectations
    • Performance: The measure of how well an application is functioning, as reflected by end-to-end response time measurements
  • All measurements are color-coded according to their severity, based on the following scale:
    • Green (good): 66–100
    • Yellow (medium): 33–67
    • Red (bad): 0–32

For more information about health ratings, see the BMC Transaction Management Application Response Time Central User Guide.

Warning

Note

Health ratings are refreshed according to the following schedule:

  • Current health ratings are refreshed once in 5 minutes.
  • Health ratings from the other two time ranges are refreshed once in 15 minutes--on the hour, 15 minutes past the hour, 30 minutes past the hour, and 45 minutes past the hour.

You might see differences between the measurements in the Projects Overview dashlet and the BMC TM ART user interface. This is a result of monitors recording data in the BMC TM ART database after the dashlet queried BMC TM ART for the same time range. This happens, for example, when a backlog exists in the BMC TM ART Execution Server or Application Server or when a transaction completed executing after measurements were transferred to the dashlet.

For best results, ensure that the system time on the computer that hosts the BMC Application Performance Management Console is synchronized with the system time on the computer that hosts the BMC TM ART Application Server.

To sort all data on the Projects Overview dashlet

Perform any of the following actions:

  • To sort alphabetically by project name, click the Project Name column header. Click once to sort in ascending order; click again to sort in descending order.
  • To sort in descending order of open incidents (with the largest number at the top), click the arrow next to the Open Incidents column header, and select the type of measurement by which to sort (either the total number or any of the specific severity levels).
  • To sort by one of the health ratings, with the lowest (that is, worst) rating at the top, click the arrow next to the relevant column header and select the type of measurement by which to sort (Health, Availability, Accuracy, or Performance).

All project rows in the table are reorganized.

To view the status of data collection for a project

Hover over the name of the project.

A tooltip displays the following information:

  • Full name of the project

This is especially useful if the name of the project is very long and is truncated on the dashlet.

  • Most recent time when updated project data was obtained from the BMC TM ART back-end service (based on the local time zone of the browser)
  • Messages with additional information about the connection

These messages can help you troubleshoot problems. For example, if N/A is displayed in any of the columns, the cause of the problem is reported through this message. Typical examples of problems are:
    • Project is inactive in BMC TM ART.
    • Project was deleted in BMC TM ART.
    • Connection to BMC TM ART Central failed.
To launch BMC TM ART in context for additional information

Perform any of the following actions:

  • For more information about the incidents that were raised for the project, click the total number of open incidents.

BMC TM ART is launched to display the Incident report (Central > Monitoring > Incidents tab) for the specific project. For more about the Incident report, see the BMC Transaction Management Application Response Time Central User Guide.
  • For more information about the project’s health ratings, click a specific health rating from the relevant time period.

BMC TM ART is launched to display the Project Overview report (Central > Monitoring > Client Health tab) for the specific project and corresponding time period. For more about the Project Overview report, see the BMC Transaction Management Application Response Time Central User Guide.
