4.0.10.01: Patch 1

The BMC PATROL for VMware vSphere 4.0.10.01 patch corrects issues reported in earlier version of BMC PATROL for VMware vSphere 4.0.10.

This topic provides instructions for downloading and installing the patch. 

Downloading the installation utility and patch

This section provides the information that you need to download and install the patch from the BMC Electronic Product Distribution (EPD) website.

To download the installation utility and patch from the EPD website

  1. Create a directory in which to place the downloaded files.

    Note

    On Windows computers, ensure that the directory is only one level into the directory structure. The EPD package creates a directory in the temporary directory when you extract the files, and the directory that contains the installation image should not be in a directory deeper than two levels into the directory structure.

  2. Go to http://www.bmc.com/available/epd.html.
  3. At the logon prompt, enter your user ID and password, and click Submit.
  4. On the Export Compliance and Access Terms page, provide the required information, agree to the terms of the agreements, and click Continue.
  5. If you are accessing this site for the first time, create an EPD profile to specify the languages and platforms that you want to see, per the EPD site help; otherwise, skip to step 6.
  6. Verify that the correct profile is displayed for your download purpose.
  7. You can download the installation utility and the product patch using either of the following methods:

Using Component View
  1. In the Filter Products text box under Products, type BMC PATROL Installation Utility and press Enter, or click Go.
  2. In the right pane, click BMC PATROL Installation Utility.
  3. In the Version: list, select 9.6.01 and click Go.

  4. In the Products tab, based on the operating system, select the check box next to the files.

  5. To download the selected files, click Download (FTP) or Download Manager:
    • Download (FTP) places the selected items in an FTP directory, and the credentials and FTP instructions are sent to you in an email message.
    • Download Manager enables you to download multiple files consecutively and to resume an interrupted download.
      This method requires a one-time installation of the Akamai NetSession client program on the target computer and is usually the faster and more reliable way to transfer files. A checksum operation is used to verify file integrity automatically.
  6. Click Close icon.png to close the window.
  7. In the Filter Products: field, type BMC PATROL for VMware vSphere.
  8. Click Go.
  9. In the right pane, click BMC PATROL for VMware vSphere.
  10. In the Version: list, select 4.0.10, and click Go.

  11. In the Patches tab, based on the operating system, select the check box next to the files.

  12. To download the selected files, click Download (FTP) or Download Manager:

  13. Complete the installation procedure described in the Installing the patch section.
Using Licensed Products View
  1. In the left pane, from the View drop-down box select Licensed Product.
  2. Locate BMC Performance Manager for Virtual Servers and expand its entries to show the available version numbers.
  3. Expand BMC Performance Manager for Virtual Servers 4.0.10 to show the available components.

  4. Expand BMC PATROL Installation Utility 9.6.01 to show the available file

    Note

     You can use BMC PATROL Installation Utility 9.5.00 or later.

  5. Select the check box next to the file.

  7. Expand BMC PATROL for VMware vSphere 4.0.10 to show the available files.
  8. Click Click here to view available patch files to locate the patch.

  9. Select the check box next to the patch.

Installing the patch

Note

Before you install the patch, you must have previously installed BMC PATROL for VMware vSphere 4.0.10. The patch does not contain all of the files that are required for a complete product release.

Before you begin

You must install the patch on the following computers:

  • Hosts that are running the PATROL Agent
  • Hosts that are running the PATROL Console

Before you install the patch, complete the following steps:

  1. Stop the PATROL Agent.
  2. Back up the PATROL_CACHE directory.
  3. Delete all BMC PATROL for VMware vSphere files from the PATROL_CACHE directory.
  4. Back up the PATROL_HOME/lib/knowledge and PATROL_HOME/lib/psl directories.

To install the BMC PATROL for VMware vSphere 4.0.10.01 patch

  1. Extract the installation utility for your operating system as appropriate:
    • (Windows) Double-click ins_WINDOWS_9600.zip.
    • (UNIX) Enter tar -xvf ins_ALL_9600.tar.

      The contents of the files are extracted into the bmc_products subdirectory.
  2. Extract the patch files for your operating system as appropriate:
    • (Windows) Double-click drvsm_ALL_401001.zip.
    • (UNIX) Enter tar -xvf drvsm_ALL_401001.tar.

      The contents of the files are extracted into the bmc_products subdirectory. 
  3. From the bmc_products directory, run the installation utility as appropriate for your operating system:
    • (Windows) Double-click setup.exe.
    • (UNIX) Run setup.sh.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions until the Select Products and Components to Install page is displayed. 
  5. On the Select Products and Components to Install page, select PATROL for VMware vSphere - Patch 4.0.10.01.

  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

    After you complete the installation steps, you can delete the temporary directory and its contents.
