Monitoring virtualization
The PATROL Knowledge Module for UNIX gives you the ability to monitor the virtualization technology available with IBM POWER5, Oracle Solaris 10 and HP Integrity and HP 9000 servers.
The PATROL Knowledge Module for UNIX monitors virtualization technologies through the following applications: AIX_VIRTUALIZATION, SOLARIS_VIRTUALIZATION, HP_VIRTUALIZATION, and LINUX_VIRTUALIZATION. It monitors AIX micropartitioning technology introduced with the AIX 5.3 operating system on POWER5 (p5) servers, Solaris Containers technology on Solaris 10 servers, HP Virtual Server Environment for HP Integrity and HP 9000 Servers, and the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) guests created with RHEL 5.5 KVM hypervisor on x86 servers.
These applications monitor the statistics as follows:
- The AIX_VIRTUALIZATION application monitors and manages AIX logical partitioned processor statistics such as
- AIX logical partitions available
- Percentage of resources assigned to the AIX partition
- Percentage of resources utilized by the AIX partition
- Percentage of entitled resource utilization by the AIX partition
- Available resources not consumed by the AIX partition
- The SOLARIS_VIRTUALIZATION application monitors and manages Solaris Containers with zones and pools statistics such as
- State and type of the zones and pools
- CPU share allocated to the zones
- CPU share available in the resource pools
- Percentage of overall CPU utilization by the zones
- Percentage of overall CPU utilization from the resource pools
- Percentage of CPU idle time for the resource pools
- Percentage of CPU time spent on user activities for the resource pools
- Percentage of CPU time spent on system activities for the resource pools
- Percentage of time spent waiting on input and output for the resource pools
- The HP_VIRTUALIZATION application monitors and manages the node partitions, virtual partitions, and Integrity Virtual Machines (VMs) statistics such as
- Partition type and state
- Number of processors
- Total or available memory for use by partitions or VM
- Total memory usage by partitions
- Percentage memory usage by partitions
- Physical CPU utilization by partitions
- Percentage of CPU utilization by VM guest
- Percentage CPU entitlement for VM guest
- Total number of virtual machines (VM guests) running on VM host
- The LINUX_VIRTUALIZATION application monitors the virtual machines statistics such as
- CPU utilization of the virtual machine
- Configuration information such as maximum available memory and number of virtual CPUs assigned to the virtual machine
- State of the virtual machine
- Disk usage information
- Network usage information
