Orientation

You can monitor OpenShift cluster health with minimum input by remotely connecting to the cluster. The monitoring solution monitors the following entities of OpenShift:

  • Nodes
  • Projects
  • Cluster Operators
  • Controllers
  • Pods

The following video (3:30) provides an overview of PATROL for OpenShift.

The following table lists the steps and provides helpful links to get you started with the monitoring solution:

First understand the capabilities of the monitoring solution and plan your monitoring requirements.

The solution stores the monitored metrics in attributes that are grouped together in application classes.

Install the monitoring solution on the PATROL Agent that will monitor the OpenShift environment.

Create a policy where you provide OpenShift cluster details and configure the entities that you want to monitor. You can also enable logs that will help you troubleshoot an issue.

When the policy is created, the solution starts collecting OpenShift metrics. You can view the metrics on the Monitoring > Devices page. The following images show the cluster hierarchy — how entities are organized to provide you monitored metrics.

You can also create dashboards for frequently viewed metrics. For example, you can create a dashboard with following information:

  • CPU usage per node
  • Memory usage per node
  • Availability of nodes
  • Top 10 CPU extensive pods
  • Top 10 memory extensive pods

The following image shows a dashboard of monitored metrics of an OpenShift environment.
