Features

The following are the features of BMC PATROL for MongoDB 1.0.00

Monitoring of different landscapes of MongoDB

BMC PATROL for MongoDB discovers the Clusters, Shards, Replica Sets, Members of Replica Sets of MongoDB by connecting to the MongoDB host and port, through a Java Client. The metrics of all the different components are collected using the same Java Client. The main metrics of monitoring are availability, Lag of Replication, and a set of counters that are used by the database. The attributes of the  Mongo Shard, Mongo Replica Set, and Mongo Replica Set Member monitor types monitor the Shards, Replica Sets, and Lag of Replication to members.

Support for IPv4 and IPv6

BMC PATROL for MongoDB supports Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) and Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6). You can enter the IPv6 address as the host to monitor.

Support for different types of connections

BMC PATROL for MongoDB supports three types of database connections: 

  • SSL connection — You can connect to the database using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) connections for communication security over the Internet. SSL connections use the Trust Store key and certificates that are stored on the host computer. 
  • Direct database access — You can provide the database username and password to connect. To connect to the database using the username and password, you must have READ privilege to database.
  • Anonymous access  — You can also connect to the database without any authentication. BMC PATROL for MongoDB uses the host name that you have provided while configuring the KM, to connect to the database.

Configure using BMC ProactiveNet Central Monitoring Administration console

You can configure BMC PATROL for MongoDB using BMC ProactiveNet Central Monitoring Administration console.

This Knowledge Module is created to be used in the BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management environment. While you can use it in the PATROL environment, this compatibility is provided to support your current infrastructure till you migrate to BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management.

The online documentation only covers the use of this Knowledge Module in the BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management environment.

Instance to device mapping 

By default, the instance to device mapping for each Mongo Config Server and each Member of Replica Set is enabled. Each member of Replica Set is a device and is mapped as ComputerSystem. Also, each Mongo Config Server is mapped as ComputerSystem. These devices will appear as separate devices on the BMC ProactiveNet Operations Console.

Downloading the installation files

BMC Software products are generally distributed by way of the BMC Electronic Product Distribution (EPD) site. This section contains instructions for downloading the BMC PATROL for MongoDB installation files from the EPD website.

  1. Create a temporary directory in which to place the downloaded files.

    Note

    On Windows computers, ensure that the directory is only one level into the directory structure. The EPD package creates a directory in the temporary directory when you extract the files, and the directory that contains the installation image should not be in a directory deeper than two levels into the directory structure.

  2. Navigate to the BMC Electronic Product Distribution (EPD) website at http://webapps.bmc.com/epd.
  3. At the logon prompt, enter the User ID and Password that your BMC sales representative gave you.
  4. On the Export Compliance and Access Terms page, provide the required information, accept the terms of the agreements, and click Continue.
  5. If you are accessing this site for the first time, create an EPD profile to specify the languages and platforms that you want to see, per the EPD site help; otherwise, skip to step 6.
  6. Verify that the correct profile is displayed for your download purpose. If necessary, use the Profile list to select a different profile.

  7. From the Component View (default view), in the Filter Products text box under Products, type BMC PATROL for MongoDB (full or partial) and press Enter, or click Go. 

    Only the product components entitled for the licenses you own will be displayed.

  8. In the pop-up window, select the version 1.0.00 (default selection is the latest GA version), the platform (if applicable), and click Go.
  9. Click the appropriate tab:
    • Products—Displays the product files and supplementary related files available for download.
    • Patches—Displays the patch and service pack files available for download
    • License Information—Displays the files related to licenses.

    • Documentation—Displays the Online Technical Documentation links and the offline zip files of the documentation available for download. 

      You cannot select files across the tabs. When you click another tab, current selections are cleared.

  10. For each tab, select the check boxes next to the files and documents that you want to download. 

    Alternatively, if you select Go To Licensed Product View, you can view and download the product components you are entitled to based on the licenses you own. Scroll down until you find BMC Performance Manager for Databases, expand that entry, then click on the 3.6.00 version. You will see a list of the product components you are entitled to underneath.  Select the product components you wish to download.
  11. Click Download FTP or Download Manager:
    • Download FTP - When this option is selected, an email containing download information is sent to the email address associated to your User login information. Once the email is received, follow the specific directions provided.

    • Download Manager- This option engages a download software application that can assist you in downloading directly to a specified location. First time users are required to install the Akamai download management software. Once the software is installed, the Download Manager guides you through the download. This download management software provides you with details on the number of files downloaded, estimated time to download each file, and Pause and Resume options. 

      Not all download files are available on all platforms listed. If the files that you require do not appear in the list, select another platform.

  12. To go back to the product listing page to download other product files, or to logout from EPD, click the << Back to Product List link that is displayed to the top-right of the pop-up window.
