Configuring Monitoring Profiles in CMA

This section provides information about creating a policy and configuring the BMC PATROL for Microsoft Windows monitor type in Central Monitoring Administration Console.

Perform step 1 through step 8 to create a policy, configure the  BMC PATROL for Microsoft Windows monitor type and set thresholds as per your requirements.

If you are familiar with the policy creation steps, you can directly switch to Step 3: Monitor Configuration tab to configure the monitor types.

* indicates mandatory configurations. Click a tab to view the next step.

Note

PATROL Knowledge Module for Windows 4.9.00 policy does not work if 4.8.10 or an earlier version of the KM is installed on the PATROL Agent. This is because of the remote monitoring profile enhancement in the later version of the KM. For the same application class, you must not apply two different policies created using different versions of the KM.

For example: If you create a policy using 4.8.10 version of the KM and another policy by using 4.9.00 version, only the policy created with 4.9.00 version will work.

Using BMC ProactiveNet Central Monitoring Administration, you can define and manage policies to configure the BMC PATROL monitoring solutions.

To define general policy details

  1. In the navigation pane of the Central Monitoring Administration console, click the Policies drawer.
  2. Expand one of the following policy types:
    • Monitoring—Allows you to create or edit monitoring policies
    • Blackout—Allows you to create or edit blackout policies
    • Staging—Allows you to create or edit staging policies
  3. Select one of the following policy views:
    • All
    • Global
    • Tenant
  4. Click AddAdd.jpg, or select an existing policy and click EditEdit.jpg.
  5. Select the configurations that you want to set for the policy.

    Note

This page is applicable only for the monitoring policies, not for the blackout policies or staging policies.

In this procedure for creating monitoring policies, it is assumed that you have selected all the configuration options.

  6. Provide the following information:

  7. Click Next.

Policies and tenants

When Central Monitoring Administration receives a configuration request from a BMC PATROL Agent, the policies are applied in the following way:

  • If only a global policy match the agent conditions, then configuration from the global policy applies to all the BMC PATROL Agent.
  • If a global policy and a tenant policy or a no-associated-tenant policy match the agent conditions, then configuration from both the policies apply to the BMC PATROL Agent. If a conflict arises (that is, two policies configure the same attributes), then configuration from the tenant policy applies.

When you create or edit a policy, you can add and configure monitor types for the compatible BMC PATROL monitoring solutions that are located in the Deployable Package Repository. This topic provides information about configuration of monitoring profiles by using Central Monitoring Administration.

Note

You must be connected to the Internet to access documentation for a monitoring solution or KM. Offline help for a monitoring solution or KM does not work.

Before you begin

If you have not done so already, define a policy (Step 1) and select a PATROL Agent (Step 2) before you configure the monitor type.
