4.7.00.06: BMC PATROL Knowledge Module for Microsoft Windows Operating System

The BMC PATROL Knowledge Module (KM) for Microsoft Windows 4.7.00.06 patch corrects issues reported in earlier versions of BMC PATROL KM for Microsoft Windows. For more information about the issues, see Known-and-corrected-issues.

Note

BMC PATROL for Microsoft Windows Operating System patch version 4.7.00.06 is a cumulative patch and includes all the fixes provided in the earlier released hotfixes and patches. For more information about the fixed and open issues, see Known-and-corrected-issues.

Updates in the 4.7.00.06 patch

The BMC PATROL Knowledge Module (KM) for Microsoft Windows Operating System 4.7.00.06 patch includes the following updates:

Improved Windows Event Log monitoring

  • Enhanced performance by using XML Path (XPath)

    Added a new PCONFIG variable for filtering Windows events while subscribing it from Windows Event System. The value of this variable will be XML query.

Downloading the installation utility and patch 

This section provides the information about downloading and installing the patch from the BMC Electronic Product Distribution (EPD) website. To download the patch and installation utility from the EPD website, perform the following steps:

  1. Create a directory in which to place the downloaded files.

    Note

    On Windows computers, ensure that the directory is only one level into the directory structure. The EPD package creates a directory in the temporary directory when you extract the files, and the directory that contains the installation image should not be in a directory deeper than two levels into the directory structure.

  2. Go to http://www.bmc.com/available/epd.html.
  3. At the logon prompt, enter your user ID and password, and click Submit.
  4. On the Export Compliance and Access Terms page, provide the required information, agree to the terms of the agreements and click Continue.
  5. If you are accessing this site for the first time, create an EPD profile to specify the languages and platforms that you want to see, per the EPD site help; otherwise, skip to step 6.
  6. Verify that the correct profile is displayed for your download purpose.
  7. You can download the installation utility and the product patch using either of the following methods:
Using Component View 
  1. In the Filter Products: field, type BMC PATROL Installation Utility.
  2. Click Go.

  3. In the right pane, click BMC PATROL Installation Utility.

    Note

    You can use BMC PATROL Installation Utility 9.5.00 or later.

  4. In the Version: list, select 9.6.02 and click Go.

  5. In the Products tab, based on the operating system, select the check box next to the files.

  6. To download the selected files, click Download (FTP) or Download Manager:
    • Download (FTP) places the selected items in an FTP directory, and the credentials and FTP instructions are sent to you in an email message.
    • Download Manager enables you to download multiple files consecutively and to resume an interrupted download.
      This method requires a one-time installation of the Akamai NetSession client program on the target computer and is usually the faster and more reliable way to transfer files. A checksum operation is used to verify file integrity automatically.
  7. To go back to the product listing page to download other product files, or to logout from EPD, click the X icon that is displayed on the top-right of the pop-up window.
  8. In the Filter Products: field, type BMC PATROL for Microsoft Windows.
  9. Click Go.
  10. In the right pane, click BMC PATROL for Microsoft Windows.
  11. In the Version: list, select 4.7.00 and click Go.

  12. In the Patches tab, select the check box next to the file.

  13. To download the selected files, click Download (FTP) or Download Manager:

  14. Complete the installation procedure described in the Installing the patch section.
Using Licensed Products View 
  1. In the View: field, select Licensed Product.
  2. Locate BMC Performance Manager for Servers and expand its entries to show the available version numbers.
  3. Expand BMC Performance Manager for Servers 3.5.00 to show the available components.

  4. Expand BMC PATROL Installation Utility 9.6.02 to show the available files.

    Note

     You can use BMC PATROL Installation Utility 9.5.00 or later.

  5. Select the check box next to the files, based on the appropriate platforms.

  7. Click Product Patches tab.
  8. In the Product Patches tab, locate BMC Performance Manager for Servers and expand its entries to show the available version numbers.
  9. Expand BMC Performance Manager for Servers 3.4.00 to show the available components.
  10. Expand the BMC PATROL for Microsoft Windows 4.7.00 component to show the available files.

  11. Select the check box next to the patches.

Installing the patch 

Note

Before you install the patch, you must have previously installed BMC PATROL for Microsoft Windows 4.7.00. The patch does not contain all of the files that are required for a complete product release.

Before you begin

You must install the patch on the following computers:

  • Hosts that are running the PATROL Agent
  • Hosts that are running the PATROL Console

Before you install the patch, complete the following steps:

  1. Stop the PATROL Agent.
  2. Back up the PATROL_CACHE directory.
  3. Delete all BMC PATROL for Microsoft Windows Servers files from the PATROL_CACHE directory.
  4. Back up the PATROL_HOME/lib/knowledge and PATROL_HOME/lib/psl directories.

To install the BMC PATROL for Microsoft Windows 4.7.00.06 patch

After you have downloaded the installation utility and patch files, perform the following steps to install the patch:

  1. Extract the installation utility:
    • (Windows), double-click ins_WINDOWS_9600.zip.
    • (UNIX), enter tar -xvf ins_ALL_9600.tar.

      The contents of the files are extracted into the bmc_products subdirectory.
  2. Extract the patch file:
    • (Windows), double-click pwk_ALL_470006.zip.
    • (UNIX), enter tar -xvf pwk_ALL_470006.tar.

      The contents of the files are extracted into the bmc_products subdirectory. 
  3. From the bmc_products directory, run the installation utility as appropriate for your operating system:
    • (Windows), double-click setup.exe.
    • (UNIX), run setup.sh.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions until the Select Products and Components to Install page is displayed. 
  5. On the Select Products and Components to Install page, select PATROL Knowledge Module for Microsoft Windows Operating System - Patch 4.7.00.06.

  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

    After you complete the installation steps, you can delete the temporary directory and its contents.
