Monitoring files and file groups
This feature is inactive by default. After you enable the monitoring of files and file goups, PATROL for Microsoft SQL Server creates File and Filegroup application instances and monitors all files and file groups that it discovers. PATROL uses the DbStructureColl standard collector parameter to search your environment and create an MSSQL_SERVER_FILE (File) or MSSQL_SERVER_FILEGROUP (Filegroup) application instance for every file or file group it detects.
Enabling file and file group monitoring creates two to three instances for every file in your environment. For this reason, we do not recommend that you enable the monitoring of files and file groups if you have more than 100 databases or more than 200 files in your environment.
- To enable the monitoring of file groups and files, choose KM Admin > Setup/Configure KM > Monitoring Setup from the KM commands for the Server application instance to open the Monitoring Setup dialog box, and click Help.
For step-by-step-instructions, see Using-the-Monitoring-Setup-dialog-box.
- To view descriptions of the File and Filegroup application infoBoxes, parameters see SQL-Server-File-File and SQL-Server-File-Group-Filegroup.
- To view descriptions of the menu commands provided by the Filegroup application class, see Filegroup-application-menu.
- To view reports on the files and file groups, choose Reports >Database Resources > DB File Info or Filegroup Info from the KM commands for the Database application intance or the Server application instance, or see the KM commands for the Filegroup application instance. (The same reports are available from all three of these application menus.) For a description of these reports, see Filegroup-application-menu.
Navigation to the PATROL for Microsoft SQL Server menu commands differs depending on which platform you are using. For instructions about how to access the KM commands, see Accessing-KM-Menu-Commands.
