Using the SQL Server Instance Setup dialog box

PATROL for Microsoft SQL Server automatically detects the security mode of the SQL Server and displays only the appropriate radio buttons in the SQL Server Instance dialog box.

  • If the SQL Server is configured for integrated security, only the Integrated radio button is displayed,
  • If the SQL Server is configured for  standard security, only the Standard radio button is displayed,
  • If the SQL Server is configured for mixed, both the Integrated and the Standard radio buttons are displayed.

In the top half of the SQL Server Instance Setup dialog box, configure the SQL Server system administrator login that PATROL uses for those functions that require system administrator privileges.
In the bottom half of the SQL Server Instance Setup dialog box, configure the login that PATROL uses for those functions that require user privileges.

Warning

You must precede the login with a computer_name or domain_name and a backward slash, for example:
computer_name/login

If you are set up for integrated security, PATROL automatically populates the login name used by you to log in, but it does not automatically precede that login name with the computer or domain name.

Note

If PATROL for Microsoft SQL Server cannot find the SQL Server performance monitor objects it requires to operate, it generates the following message: "These SQL Server performance objects are not available." If you cannot resolve this issue, refer to your Microsoft SQL Server manual, see the Microsoft technical information website, or call Microsoft support.

For more information, click the following tasks:

To configure the login that has user privileges

To verify the accounts and close the dialog box

To configure the login that has system administrator privileges

  1. If your SQL Server is configured for mixed security, click either Standard or Integrated in the Security mode to use with this login field.
  2. Enter the user name for an account that PATROL will use to monitor your Microsoft SQL Server installation.
If you chose Integrated security in step 1, you must enter an account that is a valid Windows login account.
  3. Enter and reenter the password for the account entered in step 2.
  4. If you did not choose Integrated security for the account, skip this step. If you chose Integrated security for the account, in the Grant login admin privilege field, click Yes or No.
If you click No, the specified PATROL account must have user privileges.

To configure the login that has user privileges

  1. If your SQL Server is configured for mixed security, select the login mode that you want PATROL to use for connections that require user privileges; otherwise, skip this step.
Click either Standard or Integrated in the Security mode to use with this login field.
  2. Enter the user name for the PATROL account that PATROL for Microsoft SQL Server needs to monitor your Microsoft SQL Server installation. If you chose Integrated security in step 1, you must use a PATROL account that is also a valid Windows login account.
  3. Enter and reenter the password for the PATROL account entered in step 2.
  4. If you did not choose Integrated security for the account, skip this step. If you chose Integrated security for the account, in the Grant login admin privilege field, click Yes or No.
If you click No, the specified PATROL account must have user privileges.

    Note

If you chose Integrated security for the PATROL account in Step 1, and if you clicked No in Step 4, the PATROL account automatically maps to the default login account that you specified when you configured the SQL Server security options. In addition, PATROL is only able to monitor those databases that use the default login account.

  5. If you chose Standard security, select whether you want PATROL to add a SQL Server login ID for the PATROL account by clicking Yes or No. If you already added a SQL Server login ID for the PATROL account, click No.

To verify the accounts and close the dialog box

  1. To verify whether the accounts are correct, display a confirmation message, and keep the dialog box open, click Verify.
  2. To close the dialog box, click Done.
If the accounts are incorrect, a message is displayed and the dialog box stays open.
