Using the Configure Auto User Monitoring dialog box

The Configure Auto User Monitoring dialog box enables you to inactivate and reactivate the automatic monitoring of users. By default, it is active, which means that PATROL monitors all users and processes that are idle or blocking other processes. It also enables you to change the blocked and idle detection time and change the problem alert method PATROL uses when blocked or idle processes are detected.

Warning

Note

Inactivating auto user monitoring does not disrupt the monitoring of any users or processes that you have selected for manual monitoring, nor does it disrupt the automatic monitoring of users and processes for long running transactions.

To inactivate and reactivate auto user monitoring

By default, Auto User Monitoring is active, that is, all users and processes (except the sa, probe, repl_publisher, and repl_subscriber logins) are monitored for blocker processes and idle processes. Use the following step to stop monitoring users and processes automatically for these two problem processes:

In the STATE OF AUTO USER MONITORING field, click Inactive.

Use the following step to restart or reactivate the automatic monitoring of users and processes for blocker and idle processes:

In the STATE OF AUTO USER MONITORING field, click Active.

To change the blocked detection time for auto user monitoring

The blocked detection time is the amount of time in seconds that a process can block another process before the BlockerProcs parameter (under the MSSQL_SERVER_AVAILABILITY application) goes into alarm. As shipped, the blocked detection time is set at three minutes (180 seconds). Use the following step to change the blocked detection time for all users and processes:
In the BLOCKED DETECTION TIME field, click the arrow and move it along the bar between 60 and 1200 until the number of seconds you want is displayed below the bar. Or, press the arrow keys on the keyboard to increment the value by one. For more information, see BlockerProcs.

To change the idle detection time for auto user monitoring

The idle detection time is the amount of time in minutes that a process can remain idle before the IdleProcs parameter (found under the MSSQL_SERVER_CAPACITY application) goes into alarm. As shipped, the idle detection time is set at twenty minutes. Use the following step to change the idle detection time for all users and processes:
In the IDLE DETECTION TIME field, click the arrow and move it along the bar between 1 and 600 until the number of minutes you want is displayed below the bar. Or, press the arrow keys on the keyboard to increment the value by one.
 For more information, see IdleProcs.

To change the problem alert method for auto user monitoring

Select one of the following options in the Auto User Monitoring dialog box to determine the method used to alert you when the BlockerProcs and IdleProcs parameters go into alarm.

  • In the PROBLEM ALERT METHOD field, click Report.

PATROL creates a report, displays it in a pop-up window, and creates a task output window every time a user or process exceeds the idle or blocked detection time.

  • In the PROBLEM ALERT METHOD field, click User Instance (and Report).

PATROL creates an MSSQL_SERVER_USERS (Users) application instance icon for every user or process that exceeds the idle or blocked detection time, as well as creating a report, displaying the report in a pop-up window, and creating a task output window.

When User Instance is selected as a Problem Alert Method, the MonProbUsers standard collector parameter creates and destroys the User application instance icons that represent the problem users. For more information, see MonProbUsers.
