Using the ARA Default Actions dialog box

The ARA Default Actions dialogue box enables you to select (or deselect) the automatic alert notification actions that PATROL performs when any of several critical PATROL for SQL Server parameters go into a warning or an alarm state. By default, Execute ara_MSSQL.cmd, Create output file, Annotate parameter, and Trigger an event are activated.

Note

To change the automatic alert notification actions, select the check box corresponding to the automatic alert notification actions you want PATROL to perform and click Accept.

For a list of the parameters effected by the selections made in the ARA Default Actions dialog box, see Customizing automatic recovery actions.

ARA Default Actions dialog box field descriptions

The ARA Default Actions dialog box contains the following automatic recovery action options:

Recovery action option

Description

Execute ara_MSSQL.cmd

Performs the recovery or alert notification actions entered by you in the PATROL_HOME/mssql/ara_MSSQL.cmd file. The ara_MSSQL.cmd file can perform operating system commands and SQL commands via osql. For more information, see your PATROL for Microsoft SQL Server Getting Started. (This book is available on your product CD, from the epd site, and from www.bmc.com/support.)
Active by default, but does nothing unless you placed a script in the ara_MSSQL.cmd file.
See Setting up the ara_MSSQL command.

Execute net send

Sends a Windows message to each name listed in the ARA Send to Names dialog box.

Note

For this option to function, the receiving computers must have the Windows messaging service running.

Inactive by default.

Execute snmp trap

Sends the net send command to all registered SNMP managers.

Note

For information about registering SNMP managers to receive traps, see the PATROL Agent Reference Manual.

Inactive by default.

Create output file

Sends the recovery action text to the PATROL_TEMP directory and places it in the SQL_Server_name-parameter_name.out file.
Active by default.

Annotate parameter

Sends the recovery action text to the annotation window for that parameter warning or alarm.
Active by default.

Trigger event

Generates an event in the PATROL Event Manager (PEM) with the recovery action text.
Active by default.
