SQL Server Discovery Helper


This topic provides information about configuring the Microsoft SQL Server by using Central Monitoring Administration.

On the Add Monitor Types dialog, with the Monitoring Solution and Monitoring Profile set to Microsoft SQL Server, and the Monitor Type set to SQL Server Discovery Helper, provide the following details:

Description

SQL Server Service name

Specify the name of the SQL Server Service in Windows. For example: MSSQLSERVER. To find the service name in Windows perform the following steps:

  1. Go to Start.
  2. Open Control Panel
  3. Select Administrative Tools. 
  4. Open Services from the Administrative Tools list. Manually search for the service name.

Use the Add to List, Modify Selection, and Remove from List buttons for adding, modifying, or removing configurations.

Instance name used by the OSQL.exe

Specify the name of the instance used by OSQL.exe file that is osql.exe-S<instance name>

osql.exe uses a particular instance name for monitoring, that can be extracted from its command line.

OSQL.exe path

Specify the full path to OSQL.exe file. The path should be mentioned within quotation marks. For example: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Binn\osql.exe".

To Add, Modify, and Remove the configurations

Add to List

Click this option for adding the various configuration information that you provided. Click this option for adding each of the configuration details that you specified, such that you see the helper details under List - Manual Discovery Helper at the end of the dialog box.

Modify Selection

Select one of the items that you added to the list in the preceding step, and click this option to modify details.

Remove from List

Select the items added earlier and click this option to delete that item from the list of configured objects and the clear the details provided in the earlier fields.
