Verifying that the SQL Server is discovered and online


This section describes which application icons should appear and where they appear, and which application icons do not appear automatically, and where those applications appear when they are enabled or set up.

The following PATROL for Microsoft SQL Server application class instance icons appear by default:

  • MSSQL_SERVER
  • MSSQL_SERVER_AVAILABILITY
  • MSSQL_SERVER_CACHE
  • MSSQL_SERVER_CAPACITY
  • MSSQL_SERVER_COLLECTORS
  • MSSQL_SERVER_DB
  • MSSQL_SERVER_DISK
  • MSSQL_SERVER_ERRORLOG
  • MSSQL_SERVER_LOCKS
  • MSSQL_SERVER_MEMORY
  • MSSQL_SERVER_NETWORK
  • MSSQL_SERVER_PERFORMANCE
  • MSSQL_SERVER_PROC_CACHE
  • MSSQL_SERVER_SQLSERVER_SETUP
  • MSSQL_SERVER_USER_DEF_CNTRS

If the SQL Server database is configured for database mirroring and log shipping, the following PATROL for Microsoft SQL Server application class instance icons appear:

  • MSSQL_SERVER_DB_MIRRORING
  • MSSQL_SERVER_LOG_SHIPPING

If the SQL Server AlwaysOn is configured, the following PATROL for Microsoft SQL Server application class instance icons appear:

  • MSSQL_SERVER_AON
  • MSSQL_SERVER_AON_AVAILABILITY_DATABASES_CONTAINER
  • MSSQL_SERVER_AON_AVAILABILITY_DATABASE
  • MSSQL_SERVER_AON_AVAILABILITY_GROUPS_CONTAINER
  • MSSQL_SERVER_AON_AVAILABILITY_GROUP
  • MSSQL_SERVER_AON_AVAILABILITY_LISTENERS_CONTAINER
  • MSSQL_SERVER_AON_AVAILABILITY_LISTENER
  • MSSQL_SERVER_AON_AVAILABILITY_REPLICAS_CONTAINER
  • MSSQL_SERVER_AON_AVAILABILITY_REPLICA

The following PATROL for Microsoft SQL Server application class instance icons do not appear by default:

  • MSSQL_SERVER_FILE
  • MSSQL_SERVER_FILEGROUP
  • MSSQL_SERVER_PUBLISHED
  • MSSQL_SERVER_SUBSCRIBERS
  • MSSQL_SERVER_OBJECT
  • MSSQL_SERVER_USERS

The following PATROL for Microsoft SQL Server application classes are not represented by icons:

  • MSSQL_SERVER_ADMIN application
  • MSSQL_SERVER_ LOGIN_MGMT application

To verify that the objects are discovered

  1. Double-click the PatrolMainMap to open the window that contains the MSSQL_SERVER application instance icon.
  2. Double-click on the MSSQL_SERVER application instance icon to open the window that contains the application icons as shown in the following figure.

     The MSSQL_SERVER_ERRORLOG application icons appear under the MSSQL_SERVER icon when you have enabled error log monitoring. See Error-log-monitoring and Monitoring error logs.
    The MSSQL_SERVER_SUBSCRIBERS and MSSQL_SERVER_ PUBLISHED application instance icons appear under the MSSQL_SERVER icon when you have replication defined and enabled. See Replication monitoring  and Monitoring replication.
    The MSSQL_SERVER_USERS application instance icons appear under the MSSQL_SERVER icon when you change the default settings for user monitoring. See User-and-process-monitoring and Monitoring users and processes.
  3. Double-click on the MSSQL_SERVER_DB application icon to open a window that contains a MSSQL_SERVER_DB application instance icon for each database discovered for the SQL Server instance, as shown in the following figure.

The name of the database the MSSQL_SERVER_DB application instance represents displays under each Database instance icon.
 The MSSQL_SERVER_FILE and MSSQL_SERVER_FILEGROUP application instance icons appear under the MSSQL_SERVER_DB application instance icon when you enable file and file group monitoring. See File and file group monitoring and Monitoring files and file groups.
The MSSQL_SERVER_OBJECT application instance icons appear under the MSSQL_SERVER_DB application icon when you select an object to monitor. See Object monitoring and Monitoring objects.
If the appropriate icons do not appear after two to three minutes, set the prediscovery and discovery debug mode for PATROL for Microsoft SQL Server by using the MSSQL_SERVER > KM Commands > DEBUG menu command, and see the Show System Output Window for the possible reasons.
