Configuring domain  monitoring


The Add Monitor Types dialog box enables you to monitor the performance of domain server when you select Exchange domain Monitoring as the monitor type. For more information, see Configuring monitoring settings.

Exchange domain monitoring

Enable automatic discovery across domain

Select this check box to enable automatic discovery and monitoring of all the Exchange servers within the domain.

Enabling this feature sets the KM to automatic discovery and monitoring all the Exchange Servers within the domain. Ensure that the Exchange Management Shell is installed on the PATROL Agent computer and the PATROL Agent default account has permissions to access the remote Exchange servers included in the domain.

Exchange Server

Configuration details

Fully qualified server name

Enter the Exchange Server's fully qualified server name for remote monitoring.

Exchange domain user credentials

Enter the following details:

  1. User Name: Enter the Exchange user account that is used to access the Exchange server, directory, user mailboxes, and messaging subsystems in the following format: domain\username.  (Applicable for Microsoft Exchange 2010 and later)

    Verify that this account meets the following requirements:
    • Member of domain user account
    • Member of the local Administrators group
    • Exchange View Only Organization Management.
  2. Password: Enter a valid password.
  3. Confirm Password: To confirm, enter the password again.

Server performance

Perfmon objects

Select one or more of the following server perfmon objects, which you want to monitor. By default, all perfmon objects listed are selected:

  • Database
  • Database Instances
  • Mail Submission
  • IS Public
  • IS Mailbox
  • IS Client
  • Transport Queues

Components

Enable

Select this check box to monitor the components available in the Exchange Servers.

Queues

Enable

Select this check box to monitor the queues available on the Exchange Servers.

Delivery types

Select one or more of the following queue delivery types, that you want to monitor. By default, all the delivery types listed are selected:

Database 

Enable

Select this check box to enable monitoring of the databases available on the remote exchange server.

Active copy 

Select the database active copy status to monitor.

Select one or more of the following database status type, that you want to monitor. By default, all the database status types listed are selected:

  • Healthy
  • Mounted
  • Seeding (source)

Context index state 

Select one or more of the following database content index state types, that you want to monitor. By default, all the content index state types listed are selected:

  • Healthy
  • Mounted
  • Seeding (source)

  • Resynchronizing
  • Dismounted
  • Failed
  • Disconnected
  • Service down
  • Unknown

Mailbox accounts

The Exchange mailbox account is used to connect to the Exchange server, gather information about private and public folders, and send and receive email messages. 

  1. Enable: Select this check box to enable monitoring of the database mailbox accounts for the remote exchange server.
  1. Interval time (hours)Enter the interval time after which the total, active and inactive mailbox account information will be displayed. The maximum interval time you can select for displaying the information is 50, minimum interval time is 0. By default, this value is set to 6 hours.

If you set the minimum interval time to 0, the KM will collect the data when the main collector collects the data. For example, if the main collector is set to 5 minutes, then the mailbox account information will be collected every 5 minutes.


Log files

The Exchange Server database log files record all changes to an Exchange Server database.

  1. Enable: Select this check box to enable monitoring of all the database log files for the remote exchange server.
  1. Interval time (hours)Enter the interval time after which the database log file size and the number of log files will be displayed. The maximum interval time you can select for displaying the information is 50, minimum interval time is 0. By default, this value is set to 2 hours.

If you set the minimum interval time to 0, the KM will collect the data when the main collector collects the data. For example, if the main collector is set to 5 minutes, then the mailbox account information will be collected every 5 minutes.


Watch users

Watch users

  1. Enable: Select this check box to monitor resource utilization of selected Exchange users.
  2. Mailbox user: Enter the Exchange user name (can be an alias name or the email address).
  3. Perform one of the following steps:
    1. Click Add to List to add the mailbox user to the watched users list.
    2. Click Modify Selection to save changes made to the already added mailbox user.
    3. Click Remove from List to remove a selected mailbox user from the list.

Message traffic

Message traffic

  1. Enable: Select this check box to monitor the message traffic for the remote exchange server.

Top consumers

Top mailboxes


Enter the following details to monitor the top resource-consuming mailboxes:

  1. Enable: Select this check box to enable monitoring of the top resource-consuming mailboxes.
  2. Number of mailboxes to monitor: Select the number of mailboxes you want to monitor. The maximum number of mailboxes you can select for monitoring is 50, minimum number of mailboxes you can select for monitoring is 0. By default, this value is set to 5.
  3. Identify by: Select one of the following for identifying the top mailboxes:

      • Messages count
      • Message size

Top folders

Enter the following details to monitor the top resource-consuming folders:

  1. Enable: Select this check box to enable monitoring of the top resource-consuming folders.
  2. Number of folders to monitor: Select the number of folders you want to monitor. The maximum number of folders you can select for monitoring is 50, minimum number of folders you can select for monitoring is 0. By default, this value is set to 5.
  3. Identify by: Select one of the following for identifying the top folders:

      • Messages count
      • Message size

 

Top senders



Enter the following details to monitor the top Exchange Server mail senders:

  1. Enable: Select this check box to enable monitoring of the top Exchange Server mail senders.
  2. Number of senders to monitor: Select the number of mail senders you want to monitor. The maximum number of senders you can select for monitoring is 50, minimum number of senders you can select for monitoring is 0. By default, this value is set to 5.
  3. Identify by: Select one of the following for identifying the senders:
    • Messages count
    • Message size
  4. Number of messages: Monitor top senders based on the total number of messages
  5. Message size: Monitor top senders based on the total message size (MB).

 

Top receivers



Enter the following details to monitor the top Exchange Server mail receivers:

  1. Enable: Select this check box to enable monitoring of the top Exchange Server mail receivers.
  2. Number of receivers to monitor: Select the number of mail receivers you want to monitor. The maximum number of receivers you can select for monitoring is 50, minimum number of receivers you can select for monitoring is 0. By default, this value is set to 5.
  3. Identify by: Select one of the following for identifying the receivers:
    • Messages count
    • Message size
  4. Number of messages: Monitor top receivers based on the total number of messages
  5. Message size: Monitor top receivers based on the total message size (MB).

 

RoundTrip

Internet

RoundTrip Internet monitoring measures the response time for delivery between two Exchange servers running on the internet.

Enter the following details for monitoring the mail response time between two Exchange servers:

  1. Mail server name: Enter the internet mail server name to send the email message, e.g. : gmail.comyahoo.com
  2. User Name: Enter the user name of the sender mail box account.
  3. Password: Enter a valid password.
  4. Confirm Password: To confirm, enter the password again.
  5. Email address: Enter the email address defined in the configured Exchange Server that will be used to send or receive the email messages from the Internet mail server.
  6. Attachment: Enter the full path to the file that is located on the monitored computer. This file will be attached to the email message before sending the email. For example, C:\BMC\Internet_session\Internet_session_file.txt.
  7. Client access server (CAS): Enter the Exchange client access server role.
  8. Timeout: Select the time in seconds after which the message will timeout. The default value is 60 seconds. The maximum value that you can select for timeout is 600 seconds, the minimum value that you can select for timeout is 10 seconds.
  9. Perform one of the following steps:
    1. Click Add to List to to add the mail server to the Roundtrip internet session settings list.
    2. Click Modify Selection to save changes made to the already added mail server.
    3. Click Remove from List to remove a selected mail server from the list.

Client

RoundTrip client monitoring measures the response time for delivery between a client host, and an Exchange server.

Enter the following details for monitoring the mail response time between a client host, and an Exchange server:

  1. Host name: Enter the host name of the client within the Exchange domain.
  2. User Name: Enter the client machine credentials to get remote access to send email messages. The user must have an associated mail box account.
  3. Password: Enter a valid password.
  4. Confirm Password: To confirm, enter the password again.
  5. Email address: Enter the email address defined in the configured Exchange Server that will be used to receive the email message that was sent from the client computer. The configured administrator credentials should be associated with this mailbox account.
  6. Attachment: Enter the full path to the file that is located on the configured client computer, if the pure client mail submission is set to true. If the pure client mail submission is set to false, enter the full path of the file that is located on the monitored computer. This file will be attached to the email message before sending the email. For example, C:\BMC\Client_session\Client_session_file.txt.
  7. SMTP Server: Enter the name of the SMTP server that will be used to send the email message. If the Pure client mail submission option is not enabled, enter the name of the CAS Server.
  8. Pure client mail submission: Enable this option to send email messages from the client machine. Disable this option to send an email messages using the Exchange web services (EWS managed API) from the monitored computer.
  9. Timeout: Select the time in seconds after which the message will timeout. The default value is 60 seconds. The maximum value that you can select for timeout is 600 seconds, the minimum value that you can select for timeout is 10 seconds.
  10. Perform one of the following steps:
    1. Click Add to List to to add the client host name to the Roundtrip client session settings list.
    2. Click Modify Selection to save changes made to the already added client host name.
    3. Click Remove from List to remove a selected client host name from the list.

Server

  1. Source mailbox server: Enter the name of the mailbox server name to set the roundtrip server to server session. If this field is left blank the configured Exchange server will be selected as the source mailbox server.
  2. Target mailbox server: Enter the target mailbox server name to set the roundtrip server to server session.
  3. Active directory timeout (ms): Select the time in milliseconds after which the timeout will occur. The default value is 15 seconds. The maximum value that you can select for timeout is 1000 milliseconds, the minimum value that you can select for timeout is 10 milliseconds.
  4. Execution timeout (ms): Select the execution time in milliseconds. The default value is 240 seconds. The maximum value that you can select for timeout is 5000 milliseconds, the minimum value that you can select for timeout is 100 milliseconds.
  5. Cross premises: Select this check box to enable the CrossPremises parameter. The CrossPremises parameter specifies whether the mail flow test will be conducted in cross-premises mode. Enable this parameter if your organization is using a cross-premises deployment and you want to verify cross-premises mail flow. Only for MS Exchange Server version 2010 and later.
  6. Perform one of the following steps:
    1. Click Add to List to add the source mailbox server to the Roundtrip session settings list.
    2. Click Modify Selection to save changes made to the already added source mailbox server.
    3. Click Remove from List to remove a selected source mailbox server from the list.

Add to List

Click this option to add the Exchange Server name to exchange server list.

Modify Selection

Click this option to save changes made to the already added Exchange Server name.

Remove from List

Click this option to remove a selected Exchange Server name.

Agent actions

Enable agent actions

Select this check box to enable agent actions. Enabling this option allows execution of Exchange PowerShell command from the Operations Console. For example, Get-exchangeseerver, get-queue and other commands. By default, agent actions are disabled (check box cleared).

Credentials requires

Select this checkbox to enable username and password authentication to execute Exchange PowerShell commands.

Administration

Device mapping

Select this check box to enable device mapping. Enabling device mapping consolidates Exchange Server monitoring at device level. By default, device mapping is enabled (check box selected).

Enable debug

Select this check box to enable debugging. The log files are located at %PATROL_HOME%\PKX\logs, on the server where the PATROL Agent is running. By default, the debug is disabled (check box cleared).
