Monitoring log files with root user permissions

PATROL for Log Management provides an option to configure an existing OS user who can access and read the monitored files and folder. If due to some restrictions, you are unable to configure this user, there is an option to change the monitoring user directly on the file system.

This activity will force the KM to start external collector process, pmgreader, with a different user than the PATROL Agent default account user.

To monitor the log files that have root permissions on UNIX operating systems, do the following:

  1. Log in to the host computer as a root user.
  2. Navigate to the pmgreader directory located at /opt/bmc/Patrol3/pmg/Linux-2-6-x86-64-nptl
    Example: /opt/bmc/Patrol3/pmg/Linux-2-6-x86-64-nptl
  3. Change the owner of the pmgreader to root by running the following command:
    chown  root pmgreader
  4. Grant additional permissions to the user by running the following command:
    chmod +s pmgreader

This forces the operating system to start the pmgreader process as root user and independent of the parent process user.
  5. Verify the permissions by running the following command:
    ls -ltr
    The permissions are displayed:
    -rwsr-sr-x  1 root   patrol 5895087 Jun 25 08:40 pmgreader
Warning

Note

This procedure is not limited to the root user only, and can be followed for any user.
