Searching and monitoring XML files

Note

The XML Files monitor type is not supported any more.

PATROL for Log Management enables you to:

  • Monitor the valid XML files with the following encodings:
    • UTF-8 (This is the default encoding. If you do not specify the encoding for an XML file, it is assumed to be UTF-8).
    • LATIN1 (English)
  • Configure searching and monitoring of the element content from the XML file against the specified elements (also called as tags).

You can configure multiple search criteria for an XML instance. Each search criterion can have a search identifier, XML search string, thresholds with their states, custom events, and so on. You can specify these in the Add File for XML Monitoring dialog box.

Note

Use of the XML file search feature assumes that you have a working knowledge of XML file constructs and terminology.

The product only supports monitoring of the element content. It does not support monitoring of element attributes.

To configure the search and monitor functions, you must use a PATROL Console for UNIX or Microsoft Windows in Developer mode or PATROL Central console.

To configure an XML file search and monitor

  1. Access the LOG application menu as described in in Accessing KM menu commands.
  2. Select Add Instance.
  3. In the Add Instance dialog box, enter a label for the log file that you want to monitor.
  4. Select the XML Instance option and click Accept.
  5. In the Add-File-for-Label-instanceName-dialog-box, specify the properties for the search and for monitoring and click Update.

Tip: For faster searching, add an asterisk to the end of your partial query. Example: cert*
