Controlling parameter activity with DB2 Monitor switches

Parameter activities such as information collection and report generation in PATROL for DB2 UDB correlate with the DB2 monitor switch settings. All DB2 monitor switches are OFF in PATROL for DB2 UDB by default. You can use commands in the DB2 Monitor Administration menu within the DB2 DBM instance menu to reset internal counters (Reset Monitor ) or set DB2 monitor switches (Update Monitor Switches, Query Monitor Switches ).

Using DB2 monitor switches to regulate parameter collection and reporting activity

With PATROL for DB2 UDB, you can control the parameter and report information that you receive by activating the various DB2 monitor switches. You can turn any or all of the following DB2 monitor switches on or off at any time from the DB2 Monitor Administration menu:

  • BUFFERPOOL
  • LOCK
  • STATEMENT
  • SORT
  • TABLE
  • UOW (unit of work)

To determine which monitor switches need to activate for the parameters that you want to use in monitoring, see the following table

Reduce system overhead with point-of-need monitoring

The ability to update DB2 monitor switches provides you with more control over what DB2 Universal Database performance information is collected. You can determine, at any given time, the parameters that are active and what report information is displayed. This ability allows you to more efficiently control system memory usage. For example, if your system usage is adversely affected by making all parameters active, you can turn off the corresponding DB2 monitor switch for parameters that do not need to be active at that time. This action reduces memory usage and improves overall system performance.

Parameter dependencies on DB2 monitor switches

The following table shows the monitor switch setting dependencies for parameters. The correlating DB2 monitor switch must be set to ON to activate these parameters.

Note

When the DB2 parameters associated with these switches are refreshed, that information is collected only for switches that are turned ON. Report information that is not being collected has the value Not Collected as a place holder in the resulting display. If the Database Manager is taken offline, all the current DB2 monitor switch settings are saved.
