User goals and features

This section summarizes the basic features of PATROL for DB2 UDB EE and additional features of PATROL for DB2 UDB EEE.

PATROL for DB2 UDB EE features

PATROL for DB2 UDB EEE features

PATROL for DB2 UDB EE features

  1. Exclusive use of the DB2 UDB APIs that ensure support of international versions of DB2
  2. A "connectionless" discovery architecture, which improves performance and decreases database intrusion and overhead while automatically discovering all local and remote DB2 applications and agents, database management (DBM) instances and associated databases, tablespaces and bufferpools
  3. Extensive error reporting during the DB2 discovery phase
  4. SQL Viewer facility, which can display dynamic or static SQL for problem identification and performance analysis
  5. DB2 Diagnostic Log monitoring and management
  6. Optional discovery and monitoring of DMS and SMS tablespaces and the ability to automatically add DMS tablespace containers
  7. Continuous support for mission-critical DB2 servers through the DB2ServerOK parameter, which can be configured to restart the database manager when it has been abnormally terminated
  8. Ability to diagnose and head off potential resource-contention bottlenecks through deadlock detection, analysis, and preset actions
  9. Optional ability to automatically "black out" or inactivate the KM component at a preset day and time
  10. Ability to create, alter, or delete multiple buffer pools for DB2 Universal Databases
  11. Extensive reporting of DB2 resource states and statistics
  12. Correlation of DB2 applications to DB2 agents
  13. Dynamically updated icons to display the status of long-running commands during runtime
  14. DB2 agent objects nested beneath DB2 application objects
  15. The deprecated IBM APIs in PATROL for DB2 UDB are replaced with SQL queries and DB2 SnapShot commands.

The following collectors and their respective parameters now collect data using SQL queries or DB2 SnapShot commands instead of APIs.
    • CollConnectToDB Collector
    • CollPerformance Collector
    • CollInstance Collector
    • CollTableSpace Collector
    • CollAgent Collector
    • CollBufferpool Collector
    • CollDatabase Collector

PATROL for DB2 UDB EEE features

  1. Monitors databases spanning multiple partitions and supports parallel execution of commands to partitioned databases
  2. Provides enhanced application reporting to show application agent and subagent status across all nodes
  3. Aggregates selected instance, database, and bufferpool parameters across all nodes
  4. Correlates a user-defined selection of parameters across all nodes, presenting the results in a graphical format or text report
  5. Collects performance statistics for each node associated with a database and displays the results in a single report
  6. Enables the following features, which allow you to selectively configure and manage DB2 database partitions across multiple nodes:
    • Create, alter, and drop DB2 nodegroups
    • View database node and nodegroup configurations and reports
    • Redistribute nodegroups to balance data loads across partitions
  7. Allows for single-node execution of database administration tasks such as
    • Starting and stopping the DBM on a single node
    • Creating and dropping databases on a single node
  8. Monitors Fast Communications Manager (FCM) activity
  9. The deprecated IBM APIs in PATROL for DB2 UDB are replaced with SQL queries and DB2 SnapShot commands.

The following collectors and their respective parameters now collect data using SQL queries or DB2 SnapShot commands instead of APIs.
    • CollConnectToDB Collector
    • CollPerformance Collector
    • CollInstance Collector
    • CollTableSpace Collector
    • CollAgent Collector
    • CollBufferpool Collector
    • CollDatabase Collector
