Configuring the PATROL response to the DB2ServerOK alarm

The DB2ServerOK parameter reports the status of the database manager (DBM). Use this task to configure PATROL for DB2 UDB to display an alarm state when the DBM terminates, or to attempt to restart the DBM. If you select the Alarm Only option, the PATROL KM does not attempt to restart the DBM.

  1. From the SETUP menu, select Configuration > Configure KM Defaults > DB2 Instance Settings.
  2. If more than one instance exists, select an instance from the selection box and click OK.
The Configure KM Defaults: DB2 Instance Settings window appears.
  3. In the DB2ServerOK parameter actionbox, select one of the following options to control how the KM acts if the parameter goes into an alarm state:
    • No Action --The KM takes no action (default).
    • Alarm Only --The parameter goes into an alarm state.
    • Restart Server if the following file does NOT exist --The KM attempts to restart the DBM that has stopped only if you do not enter a file name in this box or if the KM cannot locate the file that you have entered.
If the KM is unable to restart the server when this option is selected, the DB2ServerOK parameter goes into an alarm state.

      Note

The file name can be for an empty file that is accessible by the KM and serves as an indication to the KM not to restart the server. The file name feature allows users who use scripts (shells) to perform their server maintenance to create the temporary file (file name) as the first step in their scripts, and then stop the server and perform some maintenance on it without the KM trying to restart it. As the last step in their scripts, users delete the file name and the KM then restarts the server the next time that it is stopped. If the KM successfully restarts the DB2 server, the parameter value is set to 2. By setting the parameter value to 2 upon a successful restart, a recovery action can be written to perform some cleanup or provide some notification of the restart. On the next collection cycle, the parameter value will be set to 1 if the server is running, or 0 if the server stopped running again.

      Warning

If you select the Restart Server option, the server also restarts when you select Database Administration > Database Modes > Stop Database Manager or Force Stop of Database Manager from the DB2 instance menu.

  4. Click OK.

Tip

When the server restarts, the KM might not restart the databases on that server. If the databases have not restarted, right-click on each database icon and select Database Administration > Recovery Management > Restart Database.
