User goals and features

You can use BMC PATROL for Cisco Nexus to achieve the following goals.

Switch monitoring

BMC PATROL for Cisco Nexus can monitor and display the following parameters of switch performance:

  • Health of the switch, including temperature, power supply, and fan status
  • Resource data, including CPU utilization, memory usage, and processes
  • Interface data
  • Current port

Multiple display options

BMC PATROL for Cisco Nexus is supported by all of the following BMC proprietary display applications:

  • PATROL Classic console
  • PATROL Central console
  • PATROL Web console
  • BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management

Customized Monitoring

You can include or exclude groups of interface parameters that monitor networking features or parameters that monitor specific components. This enables you to concentrate your resources on the processes that are essential to your needs.

List of optional interface parameter groups

These groups of interface parameters replicate the Cisco Nexus defined groups, they provide additional monitoring for specific networking functions.

  • Basic: This group is the default group for monitoring.
  • Virtual Data Center
  • SVI
  • Extended Tunnel
  • Extended Parameters

List of optional components

  • Health
  • Management
  • Control
  • Ethernet
  • Port Channel
  • Port Profile

Data collection

Data is collected remotely by means of an external Java collector that is installed together with the BMC PATROL for Cisco Nexus. No external applications are installed on the Cisco Nexus switch.

Automatic discovery

After a switch has been configured, BMC PATROL for Cisco Nexus automatically discovers all the monitored objects, for example fans, power supplies, interfaces, port profiles, CPU usage. These are displayed under the switch. Discovery is repeated in unison with the data collection schedule.

Importing Cisco dynamic thresholds

You can import Cisco dynamic thresholds to the BMC PATROL for Cisco Nexus. In this release, only the sensor’s current temperature thresholds can be imported.

Fine tuning of thresholds

Each switch installation must be take into consideration different conditions, Service Level Agreement (SLA), and requirements. Most parameters are not configured with factory defined thresholds. You add and customize the threshold values of each monitored parameter.
