Architecture
This page contains information about the general hierarchy of BMC PATROL for Cisco Nexus switch and about the hierarchy of information displayed on the PATROL console.
Cisco Nexus switch data collection
All data is collected from the Cisco Nexus switch remotely by the Java collector. The PATROL Agent performs the tasks of scheduling and display, as follows:
- After a switch is configured, an SSH connection is opened between the Java collector and the Nexus switch.
- An XML agent process is started on the SSH connection. This connection remains open as long as the Java process is running.
- The PATROL Agent sends Java based requests for information to the Java collector for Health, Interface, and Port Profile.
- The Java collector sends XML based requests to the switch via the standard switch API’s. The requested data is returned back to the PATROL Agent via the Java collector.
- The collection process is repeated according to the configured schedule.
Data display hierarchy
Under the main root icon (named Cisco Nexus), are displayed an icon representing the _DataManagerStatus parameter followed by the instances of all the configured switches. Right-clicking the root icon enables access to menu commands that are used to configure and administrate the product.
Each switch instance can also be expanded to display a hierarchical tree of components, and parameters that monitor them. For example under Health, Fan is displayed, under Fan all the discovered fans are displayed, under each fan is a parameter that you can click to display the fan status.
Some menu commands can be accessed by right-clicking the switch instance.
Data display hierarchy of Cisco Nexus 2000 Fabric Extenders
Cisco Nexus 2000 series Fabric Extenders can work in conjunction with certain Cisco switches that function as parent switches.
Once the parent switch is configured for monitoring PATROL discovers both the parent switch as well as the extenders (Cisco Nexus 2000 series Fabric Extenders). The solution monitors Health, Fans & Power supply components of the Cisco Nexus 2000 series Fabric Extender in the same way as switches of different models.
Each discovered Cisco Nexus 2000 series Fabric Extender is displayed under Health_v2K, under Health of the configured parent switch instance.
