Streaming and compression

To optimize network bandwidth, the PATROL Agent compresses collected data before sending it to BMC Helix Operations Management. When the PATROL Agent restarts, the Agent discovers all data entities again from the deployed Knowledge Modules and streams the entity messages to BMC Helix Operations Management. This process can cause a delay because the Agent resends all data entities every time it restarts. To reduce this delay, the PATROL Agent supports delta streaming.

Delta streaming optimizes how the PATROL Agent sends entity data to BMC Helix Operations Management. Instead of sending all entity data again, the Agent sends only new entities or entities that the Agent did not previously deliver.

Delta streaming is disabled by default. When delta streaming is enabled, the Agent maintains a persistent record of all delivered entities.

Enabling delta streaming

  1. On the Monitor Policies page, click Configuration and select Monitor Policies.
  2. Click the action menu of the policy that you want to modify and select Edit.
  3. In the Configuration Variables tab, click Add Configuration Variable.
  4. On the Add Configuration Variable page, in the Variable field, enter /AgentSetup/enableDeltaStreaming.
  5. Select the required Replace operation.
  6. In the Value field, enter 1.
