Service Modeling

A service is a logical group of entities or Configuration Items (CIs) that work together to achieve a comprehensive, end-to-end business goal. HR service, admin service, and payroll service are a few examples of business services. These entities can be applications, middleware, security, storage, networks, and other subservices that provide context to business goal.

A few advantages of defining a service are:

  • Enables you to efficiently manage the underlying applications and infrastructure relevant to your business.
  • Provides an option to track the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) associated with the service.

Service models are visualizations of services and the relationships between various logical components or CIs. Service models provide business context to the information within the service.

Service modeling in BMC Helix AIOps

In BMC Helix AIOps, you can use the following methods to define service models:

  • Service blueprints— This modeling approach provides you with the advantage of adding rule-based dynamic content to your service model.  By using this approach, you can gain complete control over service composition. For more information, see  Understanding service blueprints and Creating service models.
  • BMC Helix Discovery services— With this modeling approach, you can define services in BMC Helix Discovery and view and add those services in BMC Helix AIOps while creating service models. For more information, see Service and application modeling.

Service modeling in BMC Helix Discovery

In BMC Helix Discovery, you can use the following methods to define service models:

  • Service blueprints— This modeling approach provides you with the advantage of adding rule-based dynamic content to your service model.  By using this approach, you can gain complete control over service composition. For more information, see Service modeling with blueprints.
  • Start anywhere modeling—  With this modeling approach, you can choose any entry point into an application or business service and begin modeling from that point. For more information, see Start anywhere modeling.
