Monitoring and managing events
An event is a notification that indicates a change in the state of an application or device that you are monitoring. Events help you discover health issues across your data center from a single console. When the product discovers an issue with a device, the monitor that is set up for that device activates an event with a particular severity. In BMC Helix Operations Management, use the Monitoring > Events page to view all events.

Event classification
Events can be classified as primary and secondary or related events. The following table displays information about primary and secondary events.

| Primary event | A primary event is an aggregated event derived from several matching events. For example, you can derive a single event from the secondary events listed in the following example: The host1.bmc.com host is shutting down |
| Secondary or related event | Secondary events are a set of matching events that can be combined to create a single aggregated event. For example, if the host1.bmc.com host is shut down, you may receive several events originating from that host as shown in the following example:

Event operations
Use the Events page to manage events. You can perform the following tasks:
- Take action on events. For more information, see Performing event operations.
- Filter events by using one of the following procedures:
- Use the filters available on the Events page to filter events based on their status or severity.
Use advanced filters to filter events based on multiple criteria other than event status.
