Upgrade evaluation questionnaire

Copy and paste the following table to a compatible application such as Microsoft Excel, and use the evaluation questionnaire to evaluate your environment before upgrading to BMC Helix Operations Management:

Question

Answer

What version of TrueSight Operations Management are you using today?

How many PATROL Agents are deployed in your environment?

How many servers are you monitoring with PATROL Agents?

Are any architectural diagrams or data flow diagrams of your infrastructure available?

List all incoming event integrations, if known, or at least the number of event sources.

Roughly how many Event Management rules need to be converted (to the nearest 10 is fine)?

List all outgoing event integrations and use cases, such as Remedy for incident ticketing, TrueSight Orchestration for auto-recovery, Oracle DB for reporting, AlarmPoint for notification, and so on.

If you are using IBRSD or BSR for ticketing, what level are you using?

Level 1 = Event

Level 2 = CI

Level 3 = Service Model

Are you doing event and/or metric reporting?

If yes, are you using TrueSight Operations Management Reporting or an external reporting tool?

If you are using TrueSight Operations Management Reporting, how many reports need to be converted?

Do you use agent-side thresholds, server-side thresholds, or both?

Do you use service models?

If yes, how do you populate the data into TrueSight Operations Management? For example, by using an out-of-the-box CMDB integration, the ppublish command, TechData integration to ServiceNow CMDB, or the TrueSight Operations Management user interface?

Are you using App Visibility Management?

If yes, what components? - Synthetic Transaction Monitoring, EUEM, Agent-based or agentless Java injection

For each incoming event integration, what method is used if known? For example, Dell via SNMP, OEM via msend, SCOM via IIWS, or a custom application via REST API.

Do you do any automated recovery or data collection with scripts that are called from rules?

If yes, provide the script details.

Do you have an integration between RSSO and an authentication provider, such as LDAP, SiteMinder, or Active Directory?

If yes, provide the details.

List any other integrations and use cases, such as Atrium CMDB for CI association, external DB for data table population, and so on.

List any operator-initiated actions performed from the TrueSight Operations Management console, such as ticketing, notification, or recovery scripts.

Describe any dashboards or views that need to be migrated to BMC Helix Operations Management.

If you have a "propagation map" or diagram that shows event flow, please include it.

Roughly how many CIs are published from the CMDB to TrueSight Operations Management?

Use the following command to obtain this information:

mquery -n <cell_name> -d -a MC_SM_COMPONENT -s COUNT

If you use ITDA, list the data sources and the number of templates or log types that are in use.

If possible, install and run the Health Check Utility from the following location and complete the steps given below:https://community.bmc.com/s/article/TrueSight-Operations-Management-Health-Check-Tool

  1. Generate a report with the -HelixEvaluate flag on TrueSight Presentation Server.
  2. Zip the report of the folder.
  3. Generate reports on each of TrueSight Infrastructure Management and TrueSight Presentation Serverwithout the -HelixEvaluate flag.
  4. Zip the report of the folgers.
  5. Send the zip reports to BMC.

If possible, export all policies, selectors, timeframe records, and data tables that are in use.

Use the following commands to produce files in the correct format:

mquery -q -d -n <cell_name> -a POLICY -f BAROC  -w "enabled: == 1" > policies.baroc
mquery -q -d -n <cell_name> -a SELECTOR -f BAROC > selectors.baroc
mquery -q -d -n <cell_name> -a TIME_FRAME -f BAROC > timeframes.baroc
mquery -q -d -n <cell_name> -a <table_name> -f BAROC > <table_name>.baroc

For table_name, you can use the parent data class if it is available. The parent data class exports all tables that are subclasses. Leave these files in the Cell directory so that they tar up with the Cell KB.

If possible, provide a dump of your current Event Management Knowledge Bases. If there are multiple Cells, provide one of each type, for example, tier1, tier2, collector, enrichment, pncell, display, and so on.

Do you plan to migrate all the cell policies?

Do you use external events? What are the sources of external events?

Example: Applications that use msend

Do you use BMC Helix Discovery?

Do you use global thresholds that you consider during migration?

Do you use PATROL Configuration Manager for threshold management?

Do you plan to migrate the thresholds that you manage through PATROL Configuration Manager?

What is the source of the metric data monitoring in TrueSight Operations Management, for example PATROL Agent?

If you are planning to use the on-premises version of BMC Helix Operations Management, which container technology and versions are you planning to use, for example, OpenShift or Microsoft Azure?

For an on-premises deployment of BMC Helix Operations Management see System requirements. Contact BMC Support for any questions.
