Monitoring and managing events

An event is a notification that indicates a change in the state of an application or device that you are monitoring. Events help you discover health issues across your data center from a single console. When the product discovers an issue with a device, the monitor that is set up for that device activates an event with a particular severity. In BMC Helix Operations Management, use the Monitoring > Events page to view all events.

The following video (2:36) provides a high-level overview of the Events page in BMC Helix Operations Management.

Event classification

Events can be classified as primary and secondary or related events. The following table displays information about primary and secondary events.

Event classificationDescription
Primary event

A primary event is an aggregated event derived from several matching events. For example, you can derive a single event from the secondary events listed in the following example:

The host1.bmc.com host is shutting down

Secondary or related event

Secondary events are a set of matching events that can be combined to create a single aggregated event. For example, if the host1.bmc.com host is shut down, you may receive several events originating from that host as shown in the following example:

  • Primary event:
The host1.bmc.com host is shutting down
  • Secondary or related events:
    • application1 is shutting down
    • stopped application
    • Unable to authenticate application3
    • Unable to open application5

For more information about event aggregation, see Event correlation for aggregating related events.

  • Take action on events. For more information, see Performing-event-operations.
  • Filter events by using one of the following procedures:
