Adding balancing profiles

As a service designer, you can add balancing profiles while building a service model. Balancing profiles are useful while building a service model where CI are logically related to each other. For example, CIs that could be a part of a load balancing pool or a cluster. Balancing profiles provide the capability to set a threshold for the resources that are a part of a cluster, thus ensuring optimal service performance. For more information about balancing profiles, see Understanding-service-health-score.

For example, consider a database service with a base database connected with at least 10 databases in a cluster configuration. Assume that for a service to be healthy, you need to have at least four databases running successfully at all times. Without a balancing profile, the service is impacted even if a single database in the cluster is impacted. With a balancing profile threshold set to four database CIs, the service gets impacted only when the threshold value touches three database CIs in OK state.

To add a balancing profile

  1. Click Services and then click Create New Service
  2. Provide the service definition for a service.
  3. Click Health Profile and then click the service (for example, Database) for which you want to add the balancing profile.
  4. In the Define Service Health Processing pane, click Add Balancing Profile and perform the following steps:
    1. Enter a name for the profile.
    2. Select a base CI Category and based on that, select the base CI Kind.
The categories are displayed based on the CIs that are a part of the service.

A base CI is the CI node from where you want to start applying the balancing profile rule.
For example, select Host and Host Containers and then select Cluster.
    3. From the list of CI names displayed, select the CI name.
Based on the selection the CI relationships are displayed.
    4. You can choose the following options:
      1. Link Kind: Select the type of relationship between the Base CI and the related CI nodes.
      1. Resource CI Kind: Select the related CI kind.
    1. In the Fault tolerance policy section, select the quantifier by which you want to define the balancing rule:
      1. CI Percentage: Specify the percentage threshold after which the service will be impacted.
For example, if you specify 80%, the service will be impacted when 80% of the resources stop working.
      2. CI Count: Specify the number of resources after which the service will be impacted.
For example, if you specify 20, the service gets impacted if more than 20 resources stop working.

        Note

The health score of a service is displayed as 95 even if the threshold specified in the profile is not breached.

For example, if the CI percentage is specified as 80%, events for the service are still displayed as healthy (green) even if 10% of the resources are impacted and the health score gets updated to 95. This informs the operators that the service while showing some impact, is not impacted enough to cause disruption.

  1. Click Save and Close.
You can add up to 10 balancing profiles for a service, all of which are considered while computing the health score. You cannot add multiple balancing profiles for the same CIs.
  2. Click Save and Close.
The count of balancing profiles is shown as part of the service.

To edit a balancing profile

  1. From the Services page, search and select a service for which you want to edit the balancing profiles.
  2. From the action menuaction_menu.png, select Edit Service.
  3. Click Health Profile and then click a service.
  4. In the Define Health Profile pane, expand Balancing Profiles, click the Action menu for a profile, and select Edit.
  5. Edit the profile as required.

    Important

If you add any CIs, the health score computation for the newly added CIs begins 15 minutes after the service is updated.

  6. Click Save and Close.

To delete a balancing profile

If there are no balancing profiles, when a service is impacted, all CI nodes are considered for computing a health score.

  1. Click Services and then click a service name for which you want to delete the profile.
  2. Click the action menuaction_menu.png and select Edit Service.
  3. On the Edit Service page, click Health Profile and then click a service that has a balancing profile.
The Define Service Health processing displays the number of profiles.
  4. Expand Balancing Profiles and select Action > Delete against the profile that you want to delete.
  5. Click Save and Close.
