Sizing and scalability considerations

Consider the following sizing and scalability guidelines when planning your deployment.

The provided figures are estimations, meant as general guidelines for an out-of-the-box configuration, and they do not take all contributing factors (such as metrics and events) into account. If you have values in any of the listed categories that are exceptional, then you should consult with BMC Support. You must monitor your data in the first few days, and based on your results, adjust the database retention period, database size, or both.

BMC Application Diagnostics Collector sizing and scaling

The BMC Application Diagnostics Collector database must be scaled to your environment.

Collector database

To calculate the maximum database size, use the following equation:

5 GB x number of Agents = maximum database size

The equation is based on the following environmental factors:

  • Average request size on the Agent: up to 256 KB
  • Average number of entry points: 200 every five minutes
  • Collector database retention period: 35 days (default)

Significant changes to any of the factors affects the database size requirements accordingly.

The default maximum database size is 100 GB, which is enough for 20 Agents in the aforementioned environment. For information about changing the Collector database settings, see Changing Collector settings.

Examples
  • For 30 Agents, use the following equation to calculate the maximum Collector database size:
    5 GB x 30 Agents =  150 GB
  • For 60 Agents, you can split the Agents evenly across three Collectors, so that each Collector requires 100 GB of database space.
  • For an Agent that averages 400 entry points every five minutes, then that Agent needs 10 GB of free space.

Collector software

  • The collector software requires 330 MB.
  • Together, the collector and the portal require 350 MB.

Maximum assignments

  • Maximum BMC Application Diagnostics Agents per Collector = 200
  • Maximum BMC Application Diagnostics Collectors per Portal = 5
  • Maximum BMC Application Diagnostics Agents per BMC Application Diagnostics Portal = 1000 (divided between up to 5 BMC Application Diagnostics Collectors)

BMC Application Diagnostics Portal sizing and scaling

Disk space requirements for the BMC Application Diagnostics Portal database and software are the same, no matter how many collectors are used.

Portal database

The BMC Application Diagnostics Portal database requires 1 GB of disk space.

Portal software

  • The portal software requires 335 MB.
  • Together, the portal and the collector require 350 MB.
