Performing the server installation

The BMC Application Diagnostics Server includes one portal component, and one or more collector components. You can install the BMC Application Diagnostics Portal and Collector on one computer, for a small environment, or on separate computers. When the portal and collector components are installed on the same computer, they share the same database.

Before you begin

Ensure that you have completed all preinstallation tasks.

To install the BMC Application Diagnostics Server

  1. On the computer where you will install the server or server component, launch the installation wizard:
    • Windows
      Navigate to ADOPServer\Disk1 and double-click setup.cmd.
In Windows 2008, the system may require you to right-click the setup.cmd icon to select to Run as administrator.
    • Linux
      1. Before running the wizard, ensure that you have a DISPLAY environment variable set.
      2. Navigate to ADOPServer/Disk1 and run setup.sh.
  2. In the BMC Application Diagnostics Server Installer Welcome page, click Next.
  3. On the License Agreement page, read the agreement and select the I agree to the terms of the license agreement option, and then click Next. If you do not agree to the terms of the license agreement, the installation process will end.
  4. On the Features page, select to install one or both BMC Application Diagnostics Server components, and then click Next:
    • BMC Application Diagnostics Portal. The BMC Application Diagnostics environment uses only one portal component.
    • BMC Application Diagnostics Collector. The BMC Application Diagnostics environment uses one or more collector components.

      Note

If you install only the BMC Application Diagnostics Portal or only the BMC Application Diagnostics Collector, then only the relevant configuration pages are displayed.

  5. On the Directory Selection page, enter the installation directory, or click Browse to select a directory, and then click Next.

    Recommendation

On Linux computers, BMC recommends using the default installation directory. Otherwise, you might experience issues related to permissions and access.

The system displays the available space on the current drive and the amount of space required.

  6. On the Portal Configuration page, define the following options, and then click Next.
Ensure that the required ports are available.

  7. Provide the following system connection information and then click Next.
Ensure that the required port is available.
    • Collector Configuration
Enter the listening port for the same security protocol that you set for the portal.

    • If you are installing only the BMC Application Diagnostics Collector, that is, separate from the portal installation, then the following portal connection information is required:

The [confluence_table-plus] macro is a standalone macro and it cannot be used inline. Click on this message for details.
Click Test Connection to check communication with the portal.

  8. On the Listening address configuration page, confirm the address of the current computer, that is, the computer on which you are installing the server or server component. You can accept the default address, received from the operating system, or change it to the host name or IP address of the computer on which you are installing.

This is the address that BMC Application Diagnostics components will use to connect to the current computer.

    Note

Ensure that the address is accessible from other components. If you need to change the address after installation, see Changing-portal-settings.

  9. On the Database Setup page, enter the database port number.
The default port is 3301. A new database is created under the <installationDirectory>\ADOP_DB directory.
  10. If you are installing the BMC Application Diagnostics Collector, the Collector Database Configuration page displays. Enter the following values:

  11. Verify that the information on the Installation Preview page reflects your installation correctly. Click Previous to make changes, or click Install.
  12. After the installation is complete, click View Log to view the installation log files and confirm that the installation process was successful.
  13. Click Done to exit the installation wizard.
  14. (Optional) If the operating system's host name is incorrect or you want BMC Application Diagnostics Server components to use an IP address to connect to one another, you must override the default host name configuration. The following links provide instructions:

Notes

  • If the installation fails, for example when the database stops responding during installation, you must uninstall what has already been installed before re-running the installation wizard. For more information about the uninstall process, see Uninstalling-the-BMC-Application-Diagnostics-Server.
  • You can find the BMC Application Diagnostics Server log files in the following location:
    • (Windows) %temp%\adopserver_install_log.txt
