Pre-installation analysis

The VM administrator must complete the following processes before proceeding with the installation process:

Analyze the deployment

Before downloading the distribution packages, the VM administrator must work with the product owner to determine which components, and how many instances of each component type, are needed, and where each instance will be put into service (for example, in which data center).

The distribution packages of some components have more than one descriptor file (see Downloading-the-installation-files). Factors such as expected traffic volume and the number of concurrent pages and sessions help determine which descriptor file to use.

Certify the VM installation environment

The VM administrator must certify the deployment environment by confirming that every host server satisfies the following recommended installation environment:

The BMC Application Performance Management Console runs on a virtual machine, on one of following virtualization platform (hypervisor) products:

  • VMware ESX/ESXi 5.x
  • VMware ESX/ESXi 4.x
  • VMware ESX/ESXi 3.5
Warning

You must install the components in a 64-bit environment. Your server hardware and hypervisor must support 64-bit guests.

Notes

  • BMC distributes the components in OVF version 1.0 format. OVF 1.0 files are supported by VMware vSphere 4 (and later) products, VMware vCenter 4 (and later), and VMware ESX/ESXi 4 (and later). For backward compatibility with earlier versions of vCenter and ESX, you must use a conversion tool, such as VMware vCenter Converter 4.0. (VMware discontinued support for the OVF format in vCenter Converter 4.3.) For more information, see the VMware website.
  • You cannot install the BMC Application Performance Management Console on VMware Virtual Server 2.0 because the minimum requirements for these components include 4 gigabytes of RAM. Virtual Server cannot allocate more than 3.6 gigabytes of memory to a single virtual machine.
Recommendation

When allocating resources such as memory or processor to a component, dedicate those resources to the particular VM instance. Do not rely on shared resources.

Other considerations include:

  • Sufficient processor, memory, disk, and network-interface resources for guests and for the hypervisor
  • Network connectivity from tapping points, between components, with storage devices, and to the internet
