Installing the BMC Application Diagnostics Server in interactive mode

  1. Download the BMC Application Diagnostics solution from the Electronic Product Distribution. See Downloading-the-installation-files.
  2. Navigate to the ADOPServer\Disk1 (for Windows) or ADOPServer/Disk1 (for Linux) directory.
  3. Launch the installation wizard:
    • For Windows:
Double-click setup.cmd. In Windows 2008, the system may require you to right-click on the setup.cmd icon to select to Run as administrator.
    • For Linux
      • Before installing, ensure that you have a DISPLAY environment variable set.
      • Run setup.sh
  4. In the BMC Application Diagnostics Server Installer Welcome page, click Next.
  5. On the License Agreement page, read the agreement and select the I agree to the terms of the license agreement option, and then click Next. If you do not agree to the terms of the license agreement, the installation process will end.
  6. On the Features page, select one or more of the following BMC Application Diagnostics Server components that you want to install, and then click Next:
    • BMC Application Diagnostics Server Installation: Select this check box to install both the BMC Application Diagnostics Portal and the BMC Application Diagnostics Collector.
    • BMC Application Diagnostics Portal: Select this check box to install the BMC Application Diagnostics Portal only.
    • BMC Application Diagnostics Collector: Select this check box to install the BMC Application Diagnostics Collector only.

      Note

If you install only the BMC Application Diagnostics Portal or only the BMC Application Diagnostics Collector, then only the relevant configuration pages are displayed.

  7. On the Directory Selection page, enter the installation directory, or click Browse to select a directory, and then click Next.
The system displays the available space on the current drive and the amount of space required.
  8. On the Portal Configuration page, define the following options and then click Next.
Ensure that ports entered are available.
    • HTTP Listening Port. Enter the port. The default port is 8100.
    • HTTPS Listening Port. Enter the port. The default port is 8143.
    • APM Console Host. Optional. Enter the BMC Application Performance Management Console host name or IP address.
    • APM Console HTTPS Port. Optional. Enter the BMC Application Performance Management Console port. The default port is 443.

      Note

APM Console Host and APM Console HTTPS Port are only relevant if you are using BMC Real End User Experience Monitoring. This configuration enables you to navigate between BMC Real End User Experience Monitoring and BMC Application Diagnostics in the BMC Application Performance Management Console.

    • Connection Security Level. Select an option to set the security level for communication between the BMC Application Diagnostics components (server, agent, and console).
      • Not Secured. Select this option to set the communication protocol to HTTP.
      • Encrypted. Select this option to set the communication protocol to HTTPS.
      • Encrypted Authenticated. Select this option to set the communication protocol to authenticated HTTPS.
        See Security for more information.
  9. On the Collector Configuration page, define the following ports and then click Next.
     Ensure that ports are available.
    • HTTP Listening Port. Enter the port. The default port is 8200.
    • HTTPS Listening Port. Enter the port. The default port is 8243.

      Note

If you are installing only the BMC Application Diagnostics Collector, the following portal connection information is required:

      • Portal server: Enter the portal host name or IP address to connect the Collector
      • Portal HTTP or HTTPS port: Enter the port

Click Test Connection to check if the Portal is running.
  10. On the Listening address configuration page, confirm the address of the computer on which you are installing the Server. This is the address that the BMC Application Diagnostics components will use to connect to the Portal. The address that is displayed is the address received from the operating system. You can accept the displayed address or change it to the hostname or IP address of the computer on which you are installing.
  11. On the Database Setup page, enter the database port number. The default port is 3301. A new database will be created under the <InstallationDirectory>\ADOP_DB directory.
  12. If you are installing the BMC Application Diagnostics Collector, the Collector Database Configuration page displays. Enter the following values:
    • Database Retention Time (Days). Enter the number of days before which the historical data on the BMC Application Diagnostics Collector database is overwritten. The default time is 35 days. The overwrite is automatically launched when the system reaches the specified retention time.
    • Database Max Size (GB). Enter the maximum disk space allowed for database use. The default size is 100 GB. When the database reaches the maximum size, historical data will be overwritten regardless of the value defined in the database retention time parameter.

      Note

The Installer validates that there is sufficient space available on the installation directory, and displays a validation error if there is insufficient space.

  13. Verify that the information displayed in the installation preview reflects your installation correctly. Click Previous to make any changes, or click Install to start the installation.
  14. After the installation is complete, click View Log to view the installation log files and confirm that the installation process was successful.
  15. Click Done to exit the installation wizard.
  16. Optional. If the operating system's host name is incorrect or you want BMC Application Diagnostics Server components to use an IP address to connect to one another, you must override the default host name configuration. The following links provide full instructions:

Notes

  • If the installation fails, for example when the database stops responding during installation, you must uninstall what has already been installed before re-running the installation wizard. For more information about the uninstall process, see Uninstalling-the-BMC-Application-Diagnostics-Server.
  • The BMC Application Diagnostics Server log files are located in the following directories:
    • On Windows: %temp%\adopserver_install_log.txt
    • On Linux: /tmp/adopserver_install_log.txt
