Glossary


This topic defines the terms commonly used in BMC Application Diagnostics documentation.

application server

A server which provides software applications with services such as security, data services, transaction support, load balancing, and management of large distributed systems. The term is often used for web servers which support the Java Platform, Enterprise Edition, however its use isn't restricted to Java.

BMC Application Diagnostics Agent

The BMC Application Diagnostics Agent is installed on the application server where it monitors production applications and collects statistical information on the application server and host computer. Each BMC Application Diagnostics Agent is paired with a BMC Application Diagnostics Portal and BMC Application Diagnostics Collector.

BMC Application Diagnostics Collector

Services one or more BMC Application Diagnostics Agents. Data captured by the BMC Application Diagnostics Agents, along with metrics data for the application server and host computer, is sent to the BMC Application Diagnostics Collector and stored in a MySQL database. Each BMC Application Diagnostics Collector can handle up to 200 BMC Application Diagnostics Agents.

BMC Application Diagnostics Portal

The BMC Application Diagnostics Portal manages the BMC Application Diagnostics Collectors and Agents, and communicates with its managed Collectors to pull the relevant data for display in BMC Application Performance Management Console.

BMC Application Diagnostics Server

The BMC Application Diagnostics Server is made up of the BMC Application Diagnostics Collector and BMC Application Diagnostics Portal. They can be installed either on the same host computer, or separately on different computers.

BMC Application Performance Management Console

The main, browser-based user interface for analyzing diagnostics using BMC Application Diagnostics.

BMC Real End User Experience Monitoring

BMC Real End User Experience Monitoring is part of the BMC Application Management Suite. It resolves application performance issues by providing both IT and the business with real-time insight into end user experience.

entry point file

An editable text file that enables you to configure group and name entry points, such as URLs into a more logical and readable form.

handshake

The process where the BMC Application Diagnostics Agents and the BMC Application Diagnostics Collectors initiate communication with the the BMC Application Diagnostics Portal.

heartbeat

A keep-alive signal which is sent at predefined intervals from BMC Application Diagnostics Agents and BMC Application Diagnostics Collectors to maintain connection with the BMC Application Diagnostics Portal.

policy file

An editable text file that enables you to define (configure) how the BMC Application Diagnostics Agents and BMC Application Diagnostics Collectors behave and operate.

recording file

Defines what should be monitored with regards to the different Java technologies in the monitored applications.

web server

A server that serves pages for viewing in a Web browser. A web server exclusively handles HTTP and HTTPS requests.
