Attaching a file to the log of a Black Box in standalone mode

When supporting applications that are running and being recorded at remote end-user locations, you may occasionally need to view various files in addition to the Black Box log, for example, application log files and configuration files. This results in even fewer interactions with end-users, and turns the Black Box into a conduit for retrieving all the information required for problem resolution.

Define which attachments should be saved with the Black Box log prior to setting the Recording Profile on the Black Box in standalone mode.

The required attachment files are detailed in the Attachments tab (see Adding attachments to the recorded log) of the Recording Profile dialog box.

Saving a Black Box log, the files are attached to the Black Box log (.ASL file), and are available for analysis.

To attach a file to a Black Box log:

  1. Select a Recording Profile menu option (from the Black Box menu or a Black Box pane shortcut menu) and open the Recording Profile dialog box.
  2. Select the Attachments tab and click Add. The Attach file dialog appears in which you can navigate to the file you wish to add. (You can also name a file that currently does not reside on your computer.)
  3. Navigate to the directory and file that you wish to add to the recording log, and click Open. The full path to the file appears in the file path pane of the Attachments tab.
  4. If required, select the file path, and click Edit. The "path" field is activated. You can insert the variable, and click anywhere in the File Path pane. The "variable" remains in the file path.
  5. To confirm the Recording Profile's file attachments, click the OK command button and the Recording Profile dialog box closes.
